This Shabbaton includes Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat at 5:35 PM, a Friday night dinner in shul at 6:45 PM (RSVP and payment required), a lecture at 8:30 PM (free – all welcome), Shabbat morning sermon, and study at Seudah Shelishit.

Rabbi Dov Linzer

Rabbi Dov Linzer is the Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School, and the primary architect of its groundbreaking curriculum of Torah, Halakha, pastoral counseling and professional training. He teaches regular classes in advanced Talmud, advanced Halakha and the thought of Modern Orthodoxy, and serves as a religious guide to the yeshiva’s 47 rabbinical students and its close to 100 rabbis currently serving in the field. Rabbi Linzer has been a leading rabbinic voice in the Modern Orthodox community for over 20 years, and teaches a Daf Yomi shiur which is available on YouTube and iTunes. He was most recently the convener of the 2012 Modern Orthodox Siyyum HaShas.

People's Choice winner, Alan Schwartz (Vitameatavegamin). Non-Traditional Cholent winners, Ke$het & Gavriel Bellino (Cholent Deconstructed). We are grateful to our judges (David Hammer, Julia Salant, and Tzachi Goldstein), to the 14 chefs who participated, to the more than 150 cholent tasters, and most of all, to Eli Szus who conceived of and organized the event.

 

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available kiddush is March 19th.

THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. Rabbi Bellino will teach the more essential commentaries on that week’s parsha and will contextualize the Ramban’s remarks within the greater contexts of parshanut and philosophy. Wednesdays 8:00-9:15 PM This week: The Holy Tongue

 

MIRIAM KAPLAN ON THE PRAYERS OF DAVID, SOLOMON, DANIEL, EZRA, and NEHEMIAH.  Shabbat, Following Kiddush.

Purim 5776

 

Please participate in our Mishloach Manot initiative. Consistent with our unique Sixth Street style, the packages will contain healthy and delicious snacks, bar-ware, and beverages. The packages will be available for pick-up at the synagogue on Purim Night, intended to be enjoyed or re-gifted as Mishloach Manot on Purim Day. Our Mishloach Manot are available in three sizes, corresponding to three sponsorship levels: $180, $118 and $54. Additionally, $54 packages are available for shipment (please include an additional $10 s/h per basket). To participate, kindly e-mail info@sixthstreetsynagogue.org with your level of sponsorship, how you would like to be listed on the scroll, as well as the number of any additional packages.

 

Purim begins on March 23rd. We will daven Maariv and read the Megillah at 7:30 PM (following a 6:50 PM Mincha). Please join us for our party following services.

Rabbi Dov Linzer

Rabbi Dov Linzer is the Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School, and the primary architect of its groundbreaking curriculum of Torah, Halakha, pastoral counseling and professional training. He teaches regular classes in advanced Talmud, advanced Halakha and the thought of Modern Orthodoxy, and serves as a religious guide to the yeshiva’s 47 rabbinical students and its close to 100 rabbis currently serving in the field. Rabbi Linzer has been a leading rabbinic voice in the Modern Orthodox community for over 20 years, and teaches a Daf Yomi shiur which is available on YouTube and iTunes. He was most recently the convener of the 2012 Modern Orthodox Siyyum HaShas.

THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. One People: A Film Series in Three Parts. We are excited to screen three films that focus on the diversity, challenges, and resilience of our people. Part I is February 22nd at 7:00 PM and will screen "Punk Jews" and include a Q & A with Yitzchak Schonfeld, disorganizer of Chulent. Pizza and beer will be served. Cholent Fest 2016

 

One People: A Film Series in Three Parts. We are excited to screen three films that focus on the diversity, challenges, and resilience of our people. Part I is February 22nd at 7:00 PM and will screen "Punk Jews" and include a Q & A with Yitzchak Schonfeld, disorganizer of Chulent. Pizza and beer will be served. Please join us on Shabbat Vayakhel (Shekalim), March 4-5 as we welcome our next Shabbat Scholar, Rabbi Dov Linzer, Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School. There will be a dinner in the Social Hall on Friday night (RSVP and payment required by February 29), as well as lectures and learning with Rabbi Linzer throughout Shabbat. THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. Rabbi Bellino will teach the more essential commentaries on that week’s parsha and will contextualize the Ramban’s remarks within the greater contexts of parshanut and philosophy. Wednesdays 8:00-9:15 PM

Siegel will discuss his New York Times bestselling book, Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved World, followed by a book signing and Tu B'Shvat snacks. Let There Be Water provides a model for solving worldwide water problems, showing how Israel managed to turn water from a burden to an opportunity and became an example for other countries to follow.

This event costs $20, and includes a copy of Let There Be Water: Israel’s Solution for a Water-Starved WorldRSVP and pay by January 22nd.

Ronnie is  a Professor of Sephardic Studies at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies of Yeshiva University. Tammy will deliver the sermon, "With Eyes on God" and Ronnie will teach "A Tale of Two Doves: Love and Longing in Al-Andalus" during Seuda Shelishit.

 

We are grateful to Eli Szus who will read his Bar Mitzva Parsha this Shabbat.

This Tuesday is the Fast of Tevet, which commemorates the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II - an event that ultimately culminated in the destruction of Solomon's Temple and the conquest of the Kingdom of Judah. The fast begins at 5:49 AM and concludes at 5:10 PM (or 4:32 PM if you are not feeling 100%).

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, and focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 PM

 

THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. Rabbi Bellino will teach the more essential commentaries on that week’s parsha and will contextualize the Ramban’s remarks within the greater contexts of parshanut and philosophy. Wednesdays 8:00-9:15 PM

MIRIAM KAPLAN ON THE PRAYERS OF DAVID, SOLOMON, DANIEL, EZRA, and NEHEMIAH. Immediately following Kiddush, Miriam Kaplan will discuss the structure of the reader's repetition of the Shacharit Amida, offering both classical commentaries as well as her own unique approach. Shabbat, Following Kiddush.

 

JEWISH POETIC LITURGY: Rabbi Bellino will present ancient, medieval, and early-modern religious poetry. Special attention will be paid the Biblibal, Talmudic, Midrashic, and often Kabbalist references contained therein. Shabbat, Seudah Shelishit

Chanukah is just around the corner. On Monday, December 7th (7:00-10:00 PM), unleash your inner Maccabee at our synagogue Chanukah Party at the Promenade Sports Bar (344 Third Avenue), featuring Prime Sushi. Expect delicious sushi, latkes, donuts, and all sorts of festive beverages. Our party will include a musical Menorah lighting, high stakes Draidel, and 70 TVs to watch football or Bravo. Food will be served from 7:30-9:30 PM. Tickets are $36 per person and may be purchased here. Sponsorship of the event ($180) would be most appreciated. Prime Sushi at Promenade is under the Hashgacha of Rabbi Shmuel Fishelis.

 

MONDAY NIGHT LECTURE SERIES: Our second interactive talk of 5776 is Monday, December 21, titled "KULANU: ALL OF US." Bonita Nathan Sussman will teach us about KULANU, a non-profit, 501©3 organization based in New York City. Kulanu (Hebrew for “all of us”) works around the world to support isolated, returning and emerging Jewish communities who wish to learn more about Judaism and (re)connect with the wider Jewish community. Please join us next week on Shabbat Vayeshev (December 4-5) as we welcome our second Shabbat Scholar of 5776, Rav Yehuda Gilad of Yeshivat Ma'ale Gilboa and Kibbutz Lavi. This Shabbaton includes Kabbalat Shabbat at 4:15 PM, a Friday night dinner in shul at 5:30 PM (RSVP and payment required), a lecture at 7:00 PM (free to attend), Shabbat morning sermon, and study at Seudah Shelishit.

Rav Yehuda Gilad

Rav Yehuda Gilad holds a bold Jewish world-view that embraces human rights and personal dignity. While enrolled at Yeshivat Har Etzion he served in the Armored Corps rising to the rank of Captain. After the army he earned his Teacher’s Certificate from the Yitzchak Herzog Teachers College and Rabbinical Ordination from the Chief Rabbinate.

Rav Gilad serves as rabbi of Kibbutz Lavi. He founded Yeshivat Ma’ale Gilboa in 1993, where he is Rosh Yeshiva. Committed to the idea that yeshiva students should not take advantage of Torah study to avoid civic duties, students serve a full, three-year military service as part of their five-year program. Rav Gilad is a national spokesman in promoting a Jewish and a democratic state. In June 2002, he became a Member of the Israeli Knesset
