7:00 PM TONIGHT! Monday Night Lecture Series with Dr. Elissa Sampson

11/16/2015 02:32:01 PM

Nov16

Join us tonight at 7:00 PM for the Monday Night Lecture Series: A History of the Sixth Street Synagogue. Dr. Elissa Sampson will present how our synagogue was improbably established in 1940 as a new Orthodox congregation, long after the area’s Jewish population had peaked circa 1911. She will explore history’s little mysteries such as why Community Synagogue is called by that very name. And why, oh why, does the organ protrude into the ceiling—and why do we even have an organ?

We'll learn about our very special history as an integral part of a neighborhood that once was the world's largest Jewish city, in a building that reflects the Lower East Side’s past over time.

There are 75 people signed up! It's a free event, and pizza and beer will be served: http://www.sixthstreetsynagogue.org/event/history-of-the-sixth-street-synagogue.html.

Dr. Elissa Sampson, PhD Geography

Elissa Sampson is an urban geographer whose interests focus on how the past is actively used to create new geographies of migration, memory and heritage. Her research interests include Lower East Side migration; American Jewish culture; Triangle Fire commemoration, historical preservation; museums and heritage and the gentrification of global cities. She has lived most of her life on New York’s Lower East Side and has spent over twenty years showing the historic neighborhood and its living communities to visitors and residents.

We wish a Mazal Tov to our friends Christina & Akiva Katz upon the birth and naming of their daughter, Refaela Pnina. Tegadluha l'Torah l'Chupah, ulMaasim Tovim.

We join in mourning the untimely passing of Beth & Morris Faitelewicz and Yehuda Bayme. Beth & Morris were beloved members of the Lower East Side community, and important advocates for the downtown Jewish community. Yehuda was from Riverdale, was a friend to several of us, and would occasionally visit Sixth Street. May their memories be a blessing and may their families experience healing and consolation.

We wish a Refua Shelaima to our friend, Murray Nussbaum, husband of Risa Gerstein. Please keep Murray - Moshe ben Rachel - in your prayers.

High Holy Days: Rosh Hashana begins on Sunday evening. Please see the website for more information on seating, tickets, and payment. Please email Rabbi Bellino to confirm your seating. The holiday schedule may be found here.

PARTY!!! Rosh Hashana is a long day - and lacking in kiddush. There are also many new people to meet. Why not come back later in the day - 5:30 PM to be exact - for some honey cake and a cocktail? This year's party has been sponsored by Dr. Sara & Michael Aingorn in celebration of the Downtown Community.

Book of Remembrance

07/30/2015 11:54:44 AM

Jul30

The High Holy Day season is a time of repentance and atonement, contemplation and prayer.  One of the strongest emotional moments that we experience this period, and especially on Yom Kippur, is the recalling of the memory of those loved ones who have meant so much to us and have gone on to eternal life.

To enhance the Yizkor Service, our synagogue will assemble our own Book of Remembrance.  This is an opportunity for us all to remember those people (relatives, friends, teachers, etc.) who greatly impacted our lives.

The booklet will contain:
1.    The complete Yizkor Service and assorted readings and psalms
2.    Your sponsored pages, half-pages, quarter pages and/or entry listings of those that you chose to honor and remember
3.    A message from Rabbi Bellino

We urge all our members and friends to take part in our Book of Remembrance.
The final date of submission for all entries must be no later than August 26, 2015.

Please submit (English/Hebrew) names, relation, and yahretzeit dates. For full, half and quarter page entries, please consider adding a brief statement.

FULL PAGE…………………$180
HALF PAGE…………………$ 108
QUARTER PAGE……………$ 54
LISTING (EACH ENTRY)……$ 10

Please send all entries and any questions to info@sixthsreetsynagogue.org

We thank you in advance for your participation in this meaningful project.

Kiddush is a central part of our community, an opportunity to catch up with friends and enjoy delicious cholents, kugels, salads, and desserts. We appreciate all of those who have graciously donated to provide consistent kiddushes this spring and summer. We are presently without sponsors for the next two weeks. Would you be interested in sponsoring or co-sponsoring?

We are grateful for your continued support. Please contact Rabbi Bellino to discuss sponsorship options: rabbi@sixthstreetsynagogue.org.
