Book of Remembrance 5777

09/01/2016 11:05:44 AM

The High Holy Day season is a time of repentance and atonement, contemplation and prayer. One of the strongest emotional moments that we experience this period, and especially on Yom Kippur, is the recalling of the memory of those loved ones who have meant so much to us and have gone on to eternal life.

To enhance the Yizkor Service, our synagogue will assemble our own Book of Remembrance. This is an opportunity for us all to remember those people (relatives, friends, teachers, etc.) who greatly impacted our lives.

The booklet will contain:

1.    The complete Yizkor Service and assorted readings and psalms
2.    Your sponsored pages, half-pages, quarter pages and/or entry listings of those that you chose to honor and remember
3.    A message from Rabbi Bellino

We urge all our members and friends to take part in our Book of Remembrance.

The final date of submission for all entries must be no later than September 21, 2016.

Please submit (English/Hebrew) names, relation, and yahretzeit dates. For full, half and quarter page entries, please consider adding a brief statement.

FULL PAGE…………………$180
HALF PAGE…………………$ 108
QUARTER PAGE……………$ 54
LISTING (EACH ENTRY)……$ 10

Please send all entries and any questions to info@sixthsreetsynagogue.org

We thank you in advance for your participation in this meaningful project.

Events

Tisha B'Av Film - Sunday, Aug 14 at 5:30 PM

HIDING AND SEEKING - This award-winning documentary tells the dramatic and emotional story of a Jewish father who journeys with his two ultra-orthodox adult sons back to Poland to try to find the Christian farmers who hid their family from the Nazis. To his sons, like many offspring of Polish Holocaust survivors, this is a country whose people are incurably anti-Semitic and beyond redemption. His hope is to instill in his insulated and narrow-minded sons the power of interfaith tolerance and trust. Menachem Daum and Oren Rudavsky's provocative and moving documentary HIDING AND SEEKING was featured at the Barcelona Conference of World Religions and the winner of the North American Interfaith Film Festival Best Film Award for 2004, and Grand Prix in the Warsaw International Jewish Film Festival. In the course of telling its compelling and dramatic story, HIDING AND SEEKING explores the Holocaust's effect on faith in God as well as its impact on faith in our fellow human beings. It embeds these issues in a deeply personal inter-generational saga of survivors, their children, and their children's children. Filmed in Jerusalem, Brooklyn and Poland, the film focuses on the filmmaker's attempt to heal the wounds of the past by stopping the transmission of hatred from generation to generation.

Chessed on Sixth Street - Several of us have begun to utilize the Synagogue kitchen to prepare meals for the Trinity Place Shelter. The shelter's mission is to help LGBTQ youth and young adults in New York City to safely transition out of the shelter system and grow into independent, positive, and productive adults. To financially support our efforts, please consider donating to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund (Be sure to specify Shelter Meals in the note). Thank you to our August sponsors Alan Schwartz, Moshe Bloxenheim and Dana Friedman. The next meal will be prepared in September If you are interested in cooking, schlepping, or starting your own Chessed initiative, please contact Rabbi Bellino or Tali Zilberman.

On Tuesday, September 13th, we will hold a panel discussion entitled, Confronting Sexual Abuse in the Orthodox Community. The event begins at 7:00 PM and will feature David Cheifetz (a survivor of abuse and an advocate for victims), Tamara Schoor (a survivor of abuse and an advocate for victims), as well as Dr. Michael Salamon, a noted psychologist and the author of "Abuse in the Jewish Community."

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home - especially the LGBTQ still community reeling from last week's horror in Orlando - in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We are incredibly proud of - and grateful for - our very own Tali Zilberman who this week was sent to Orlando by the Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU so that she might stand in solidarity as well provide assistance and support.

We wish a continued Mazal Tov to Julia & Shlomi Salant upon the birth of their daughter. We look forward to their naming her this Shabbat.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Dr. Michelle & Rabbi Yehuda Sarna upon the Bat Mitzvah of their daughter Maayan.

This Shabbat we welcome Rav Judah Mischel, beloved teacher in Israel and Executive Director of Camp HASC - the award winning summer program of the Hebrew Academy for Special Children in the Catskill Mountains. Rav Judah & his wife, Ora, live in Ramat Beit Shemesh with their seven children. Rav Judah will speak on Friday Night at our Kiddush (Where the Sidewalk Ends: A Shabbat Walk in the Sinai Desert), on Shabbat morning (All in the Family: A Jewish Perspective on Individuals with Special Needs), at 7:00 PM (Henry David Thoreau at Mount Sinai), and at Seudah Shelishit. Be sure to join us.

Please consider donating to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund so that a sizeable donation from our community can me made this week. (Be sure to specify Sharsheret in the note).

We are overjoyed by the great response our Annual Dinner has elicited. If you have not yet made your reservation you are running out of time. If you cannot attend, please consider joining this very important fundraising initiative.

Shavuot was a great success. We are grateful to Mendel Kaplan for his beautiful laining, Ananda Watman and Cori Robinson for organizing the Women's Wine, Cheese, & Torah, the many sponsors of our Shavuot Tisch, Ellen R. Cherrick for the beautiful flowers, the Gasman family for providing the delicious ice cream, and Rabbi Bellino whose organizing, cooking, and teaching made this a Shavuot to remember. Finally, we thank everyone who attended. If you have not sent in your Yizkor pledges, please do so ASAP.

Shavuot Tisch

06/06/2016 01:07:48 PM

Jun6

Please join us this Saturday night (June 11th) for a Shavuot Tisch featuring a light dinner, song, and Torah. This event will begin at 9:30 PM and dairy will be served. Although the event is free, we ask that you register so that we may adequately prepare. Better yet, your sponsorship of this event would be greatly appreciated.

While we eat, Rabbi Bellino will teach about Classical Approaches to Conversion in preparation for his appearance at the 14th Street Y later that evening at 11:00 PM (see below).

Rethinking Ruth: Reform, Conservative & Orthodox Rabbis Discuss Contemporary Challenges for Conversion and Inclusion. In Biblical times, a simple declaration seems to have been all it took to join the Jewish People, as expressed in the Book of Ruth. Today, things aren't so simple. Join Rabbis Gavriel Bellino, Shira Koch Epstein, and Amichai Lau-Lavie for an open discussion on conversion, inclusion and intermarriage from  Orthodox, Reform, and Conservative approaches.

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with Israel and all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to our friends, Stefanie & Matt Johnson, upon the birth of a girl.

We are grateful to all those of you who helped make Pesach so special. Please remember to pay your Yizkor pledges online or by mailing a check to the office.

We are now on Summer Schedule. Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat will be at 7:00 PM until September 16th. Join us for services and be rewarded with food, drink, song, and words of Torah.

Join us for the next six Shabbat afternoons as Rabbi Bellino presents the five chapters of Avot and Perek Kinyan HaTorah. For source sheets and charts, click here.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue

and community. To sponsor or co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush,

a Shabbocktail, our Shabbeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino.

The next available kiddush for sponsorship is May 28th.

Classes

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, and focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 PM. This week: Concluding Blessings.

THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. Rabbi Bellino will teach the more essential commentaries on that week’s parsha and will contextualize the Ramban’s remarks within the greater contexts of parshanut and philosophy. Wednesdays 8:00-9:15 PM. This week: Mixing Species.

AVOT: Rabbi Bellino will present the five chapters of Avot and Perek Kinyan HaTorah over the next 6 Shabbatot. After Shavuot he will teach Avot d'Rabbi Natan for the duration of the summer. Shabbat afternoons, 1 hour before Mincha.

JEWISH POETIC LITURGY: Rabbi Bellino will present ancient, medieval, and early-modern religious poetry. Special attention will be paid the Biblibal, Talmudic, Midrashic, and often Kabbalist references contained therein. Shabbat, Seudah Shelishit.

Events

JOMIX: Join us on May 20th at 7:00 PM for a lecture and slide show as Joel Silverstein presents the way Jewish artists use the comics medium as a mean to express their own Jewish identity and cultural experience. He will also examine the complex relationship of art, identity and culture within the Jewish community at large. He will touch on traditional genres such as superhero, political satire, romance, horror, science fiction and confessionals through a Jewish lens. We will serve pizza and beer at 7:00 PM and the presentation will begin at 7:30 PM. RSVP by May 20th.

Save the Date: Lager BaOmer on the evening of May 25th. This event will be a great time for all craft beer enthusiasts and students of Beer Yochai.

We are excited to be a host synagogue of this year’s Eshel Downtown Shabbaton on Shabbat Behukotai (June 3-4). Eshel’s mission is to create community and acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Jews and their families in Orthodox communities. Shabbat hospitality for visiting guests is appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who joined us over the first days of Passover.

We hope to see you again for the second days, which start Thursday night. Chag Sameach!

Please join us on Saturday night for our annual Neilat Hachag together with our friends at the Stanton Street Synagogue! Kosher for Pesach food magically is gross the second Pesach ends. Why not share it with your friends an hour before? Your stale macaroons might just bring Moshiach.

For more information or to learn about Downtown happenings and collaborative efforts, follow the Va'ad on Facebook.
