Community News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with Israel and all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Audrey & Daniel Tordjman upon the birth and naming of their daughter, Avigayil, and to big-brother Hillel.

We note with sadness the passing of Rav Pinchas Merling, beloved friend, mentor, and rebbe to many of us.

Join us for Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat at 6:50PM. Our Friday night crowd has grown throughout the winter, and it can continue to thrive with your participation. Expect to be rewarded with food, drink, song and words of Torah following services.

Rabbi Bellino will teach about the Megillah on Shabbat afternoon at 5:35 PM. His topic: Kissing Cousins. At Seudah Shelishit Rabbi Bellino will discuss the hymn, Shoshanat Yaakov.

We congratulate our President, Richard McBee, who has curated an exhibit presented by the Jewish Art Salon and the Brooklyn Jewish Art Gallery. Passover and the Consequences of Freedom is open for view on Sundays from March 12 thru June 25, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The opening reception will be this Saturday night from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM. There will be a Panel Discussion on April 10 at 7:00 PM featuring Richard and some other New York area artists. For more information click here.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available kiddush is March 19th.

Classes

Our classes will not meet this Wednesday, March 23rd.

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, and focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 PM.

THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. Rabbi Bellino will teach the more essential commentaries on that week’s parsha and will contextualize the Ramban’s remarks within the greater contexts of parshanut and philosophy. Wednesdays 8:00-9:15 PM.

MIRIAM KAPLAN ON THE PRAYERS OF DAVID, SOLOMON, DANIEL, EZRA, and NEHEMIAH.  Shabbat, Following Kiddush.

JEWISH POETIC LITURGY: Rabbi Bellino will present ancient, medieval, and early-modern religious poetry. Special attention will be paid the Biblibal, Talmudic, Midrashic, and often Kabbalist references contained therein. Shabbat, Seudah Shelishit. This week: Shoshanat Yaakov.

Events

We are thrilled to announce that on Shabbat Tzav, March 26th, we will welcome Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former Chief Rabbi of England. Rabbi Sacks will join us for services and will deliver the sermon. Please make every effort to attend.

The next film in the our One People series, Trembling Before G-d, will be shown on Monday, March 28th. RSVP here by March 21st. "Trembling Before G-d" is an unprecedented feature documentary that is built around intimately told personal stories of gay and lesbian Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who face a profound dilemma: how to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism and the Divine with the drastic biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. Q&A with Shlomo Ashkinazy, who is featured in the film. This event has been co-sponsored by ESHEL, an organization which aims to create community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Jews and their families in Orthodox communities.

Purim 5776

Theme: The 90s. Dress as your favorite 90s politician, TV personality, film character, athlete, or musician. Or, just come as yourself, dressed head to toe in Hilfiger or Abercrombie.

Purim Night: On March 23rd, we will meet for Mincha at 6:50 PM, and begin Maariv at 7:30 PM. We are grateful to Mendel Kaplan who will read the Megillah. Following the reading we will descend to our social hall for our Purim Party. Expect a full bar, Finback Beer, and all sorts of snacks. At some point we will be joined by our friends from the University of Purim as well as the amazing band Mutty. The party will end at some point before morning services.

Purim Day: On March 24th, we will reconvene for Shacharit at 7:30 AM, followed by the Megillah which will be read by our friend, David Waxman. The Megillah will start at approximately 8:00 AM.

Mishloach Manot: Our Mishloach Manot initiative seeks to augment our continued sense of community, to deliciously enhance Purim revelry, and to serve as a significant fundraising opportunity for our synagogue. Consistent with our unique Sixth Street style, the packages will contain healthy and delicious snacks, bar-ware, and beverages. Our Mishloach Manot are available in three sizes, corresponding to three sponsorship levels: $180, $118 and $54. All sponsors will be listed on a scroll to memorialize their eager support and heartfelt devotion. Additionally, $54 packages are available for shipment (please include an additional $10 s/h per basket). To participate, kindly e-mail info@sixthstreetsynagogue.org with your level of sponsorship, how you would like to be listed on the scroll, as well as the number of any additional packages. We prefer that you pay for these packages on our website. If you must pay by check, payments may be mailed to the Sixth Street Synagogue, 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003. The deadline for orders to be shipped is Monday, March 14th. The deadline for sponsorship is Thursday, March, March 17th.

Matanot LaEvyonim: Gifts to the poor, is arguably the most important Mitzvah of Purim. This year we are proud to partner with Rabbi Joe Wolfson of JLIC-NYU and the NYU communty in providing gifts to those in the region who truly need our assistance. Please consider generously donating to Rabbi Bellino's Discretionary Fund on the website. Be sure to specify that this  donation is for Purim Charity.

Your help: There's a lot of schlepping, decorating, supervising, drink mixing, and cleaning to be done. We need help assembling Mishloach Manot. We are also in need of megillah, bar, beer, and snack sponsors.
