Classes

Rabbi Bellino's class in Avot d'Rabbi Natan continues. This text is a commentary and elaboration on Pirkei Avot that was compiled during the Geonic Period. This late Midrash provides explanations of most of the aphorisms of Avot, as well as hagiographic on the lives of many of the sages quoted. Class meets on Shabbat, one hour before Mincha. All source sheets (including Rabbi Bellino's notes) may be downloaded here.

Foundations will resume on Wednesday, September 9th with a High Holiday Crash Course. All beginners are welcome to attend!

Saturday Night, September 5th, is the first night of Selichot. Please join us for musical Selichot at 10:00 PM.

On Sunday, September 20 (the Sunday before Yom Kippur), our downtown community will converge on Sixth Street for a morning of study, featuring Dr. Moshe Halbertal as well as other local rabbinic talent. This is an opportunity for us all to remember those people (relatives, friends, teachers, etc.) who greatly impacted our lives. We urge all our members and friends to take part. Israel Awareness Committee: The Israel Awareness Committee did not meet this past Monday night. To get involved, please email Jeff Katz.

Dear Members and Friends:

It may still be summertime, but Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are fast approaching. We invite you to join us at the Sixth Street Community Synagogue for the upcoming High Holy Days.

Services last year were beautiful and well attended. We again look forward to services led by our dynamic Rabbi Bellino and beloved cantors Mendel Kaplan and Modi Rosenfeld.

We anticipate a record number attending, so please reserve your seats as soon as possible. We will make every effort to preserve your customary seats.

Family membership ($800) includes two free seats. Individual membership ($450) includes one free seat. Additional seats for members are $125 and all seats for non-members are $250.

This late Midrash provides explanations of most of the aphorisms of Avot, as well as hagiography on the lives of many of the sages quoted. Class meets on Shabbat, one hour before Mincha. Book of Remembrance

The High Holy Day season is a time of repentance and atonement, contemplation and prayer. One of the strongest emotional moments that we experience this period, and especially on Yom Kippur, is the recalling of the memory of those loved ones who have meant so much to us and have gone on to eternal life.

To enhance the Yizkor Service, our synagogue will assemble our own Book of Remembrance. This is an opportunity for us all to remember those people (relatives, friends, teachers, etc.) who greatly impacted our lives.

The booklet will contain:
1.   The complete Yizkor Service and assorted readings and psalms
2.   Your sponsored pages, half-pages, quarter pages and/or entry listings of those that you chose to honor and remember
3.   A message from Rabbi Bellino

We urge all our members and friends to take part in our Book of Remembrance.
The final date of submission for all entries must be no later than August 26, 2015.

Please submit (English/Hebrew) names, relation, and yahretzeit dates. For full, half and quarter page entries, please consider adding a brief statement.

The Sixth Street Community Synagogue Annual Membership Meeting is TOMORROW NIGHT, Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 PM at the synagogue. All members are urged to attend. In order to vote, you must be a member in good standing (dues paid for 2014 - 2015). We will elect the Officers, Board of Trustees, and Advisory Board.

If you cannot attend in person, fill out both the Proxy form and Ballot of Officers, Board and Advisory Board Members and email scanned/photographed files to richardmcbee@gmail.com. Our hearts go out to the victims, the families of victims, and to all those affected by the shooting at the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. We pray for healing and an end to the hateful ideologies that motivate such despicable acts of terror.

Rabbi Bellino's class in Avot d'Rabbi Natan continues. This text is a commentary and elaboration on Pirkei Avot that was compiled during the Geonic Period. This late Midrash provides explanations of most of the aphorisms of Avot, as well as hagiographic on the lives of many of the sages quoted. Class meets on Shabbat, one hour before Mincha. This year's Annual Dinner will be held on this Monday, June 22nd, at The Brotherhood Synagogue. Our fundraising dinners are delicious, fun, and significant and successful efforts. We are grateful to Elie Yudewitz who will read Parashat Behaalotekha this Shabbat, the 21st anniversary of his Bar Mitzva.

We are saddened by the loss of Rochelle Shoretz, daughter of Morris Shoretz and Sherry Tenenbaum, step-daughter of Jeffrey Tenenbaum and Carol Ann Shoretz, sister of Dr. Dalia Nagel, Michael Shoretz, and Lilly Shoretz, mother of Shlomo and Dovid Mirsky, and founder of Sharsheret. Israel Awareness Committee: A new committee, co-chaired by Jeff Katz and Annie Watman, has been created to strengthen our synagogue's identification with the State of Israel's culture, people, challenges, and history. There will be a bi-monthly Israel Awareness Reading Group, meeting for the first time toward the end of this month. The first book will be "Menachem Begin: The Battle for Israel's Soul" by Daniel Gordis. To get involved, please email jeff.katz48@gmail.com.

Shavuot Women's Wine and Cheese Event: On the first day of Shavuot, Sunday, May 24 at 4:00 PM, there will be a Women's Wine and Cheese Event in the Social Hall. Bring your own wine/spirits and your thirst for a great time with friends and neighbors.

Last year's event was a huge success, with more than 50 beer enthusiasts in attendance and a Tribeernal judging for awards. The cost of admission is a six pack/growler of your choice, and we'll serve a whole lot of grilled meats. DO NOT bring anything on the list of blacklisted beers. Beer fest + BBQ + Lag BaOmer = Lager BaOmer

The Second Annual event will be a fun time for all craft beer enthusiasts and students of R' Shimon Beer Yochai. We will also be barbecuing in Lag BaOmer style. The event is from 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM on Wednesday, May 6.

Cost of Admission: One six pack (or growler) of craft or premium import beer. We strongly urge that you DO NOT bring bad beer. We will ask you at the door to acquire approved beer if you bring anything listed on the Official Prohibited Beers list.

Beers will be judged by our Tribeernal. The best from each category will be selected. If you brought it, then you will receive a prize.

5) Dark: stout, porter, barleywine, Scotch ale/Wee Heavy
