We are grateful to our Councilperson, Carlina Rivera, for purchasing our Hametz.

We are grateful to the many of you who participated in our Passover charity campaign. The majority of the funds were sent to Masbia and to Ukrainian Refugees.

Although there is a widespread custom to pay the rabbi who facilitates the sale of Hametz, we urge you not to do so. Instead, please feel free (but not obligated) to contribute to the Rabbi's Discretionary Charity Fund. Be sure to specify that this is for Passover Charity. You may pledge an amount on the Hametz Sale form and/or pay on the website or simply Venmo the synagogue @sixthstreetsynagogue.

Wishing you Shabbat Shalom and a Chag Kasher v'Sameah!

News

We are on Summer Schedule! That means that Friday Night Services will be held at 7:00 PM until September 16th! (Except on the first night of Passover).

This Shabbat afternoon Rabbi Bellino will deliver his annual Shabbat HaGadol Drasha, a special lecture devoted to preparatory Passover study. This year he plan's to present the topic of "Matzah Inflation: The Enlarged Olive" refering to the seemingly ever increasing olive's bulk of Matzah that we eat at the Seder. The class will begin immediately following the 6:30 PM Mincha.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Shoshana Bachrach & Rabbi Leead Staller who will serve as the next OU-JLIC Directors at NYU.

Passover is in 1 week.

  • This Wednesday Night, Rabbi Bellino will teach a Foundations of Passover Class. You can join via Zoom here
  • The most efficient way to facilitate the Sale of Hametz is by Digital Form which will serve as a Power of Attorney authorizing me to sell on your behalf. The form asks you to specify where the Hametz is located, estimate its value, and agree to authorize me to sell it for you. There are six sections and you will need to scroll a bit. It should not take longer than three minutes to complete. I (or my designated representative) will sell your Hametz on Thursday evening, April 14th. When I have received your authorization, will send you a confirmation.
  • Although there is a widespread custom to pay the rabbi who facilitates the sale of Hametz, I urge you not to do so.

Purim begins this Wednesday night, March 16th.

Services - We plan to gather that night for Maariv at 7:00 PM and then read the Megillah at 7:15 PM. This reading - like all synagogue services and events - is restricted to the fully vaccinated. Unvaccinated children younger than 5 are welcome. To enter you must bring proof of vaccination. (If you are immunocompromised, you are invited to join over Zoom, here.)

The following morning we will convene an 8:00 AM Shacharit which will be followed by the Megillah at 8:30 AM. (If you are immunocompromised, you are invited to join over Zoom, here.)

Sponsorship - The Committee for Purim Chaos is actively plotting various chaotic activities, toned down and consistent with our COVID protocols, but that require some financial support as well as assistance in setting up. For more information and/or to sponsor something, please click to our Purim Chaos page.

Purim Charity - Matanot L'Evyonim (gifts to the poor) is arguably the most important mitzvah of Purim. In the course of our own joy, we make it our duty to share with others, thus amplifying the spirit of unity that we read about in the Megillah, and extending the divine generosity shown to our people. In the spirit of modern Religious Humanism, we extend this kindness to both our Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors. This Purim we will again partner with Rabbi Zvi Romm of the Bialystoker Synagogue, Rabbi Joe Wolfson of JLIC-NYU and the NYU community, the Bowery Mission, the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network, and Knock Knock Give a Sock, in providing gifts to those in our neighborhood who truly need our assistance. You may make a donation here or Venmo us @sixthstreetsynagogue (be sure to specify Purim Charity!). Of course you may also bring in a check (made out to Sixth Street Community Synagogue Rabbi's Discretionary) or cash before or on Purim.

Kid's Post-Purim Party - There will be a party for the Kommunity Kinder on Sunday, March 20th at 11:00 AM. Please let us know if you and your children will be attending.

All persons currently eligible in New York City for COVID-19 vaccination are required to provide proof of vaccination in order to enter the Sixth Street Community Synagogue building, or attend any events at the synagogue.  As eligibility changes (extended to groups such as children, booster shots become available/recommended), all persons eligible will have two months from the time they become eligible to demonstrate proof of vaccination. If you have not already submitted a copy of your vaccination card, we ask that you bring vaccine verification to synagogue. We expect everyone present to wear a mask that covers the nose and and mouth while inside the building.

During this current surge of Covid positivity we are taking additional precautions to decrease the relative risk inherent to public gathering.

  • If you are immunocompromised, you are strongly urged to not attend services until positivity rates significantly decline.
  • If you have tested positive and have recently been in synagogue, be sure to contact Rabbi Bellino who - along with advisors - is monitoring community positivity. (Your health status will be kept confidential).

We plan to resume Shabbat afternoon services this Shabbat. Please join us at 4:45 PM.

Shabbat starts soon. Please plan accordingly and help us start our Minyan on time.

Daf Yomi: 8:00 AM
Shacharit: 9:00 AM
Morning Shema Before: 9:37 AM
Shabbat Ends: 5:20 PM

Our building remains open for Shabbat, but to the vaccinated only.

  • If you are immunocompromised, you are strongly urged to not attend services until positivitiy rates significantly decline.
  • If you have tested positive and have recently been in synagogue, be sure to contact Rabbi Bellino who - along with advisors - is monitoring community positivity. (Your health status will be kept confidential).
  • For the foreseeable future, Kiddush will be held outdoors, Seudah Shelishit will not be served, and increased social-distancing will be maintained. No inside dining is permitted. Should the weather not cooperate, to-go tins will be provided.

With so many of our regulars away, there will be no Shabbat Mincha or Arvit. Sunday morning Shacharit will resume a bit later in January.

Shabbat starts soon. Please plan accordingly and help us start our Minyan on time.

Friday Night Kiddush has been provided by the house.

Shabbat Morning Kiddush has been sponsored by Mindy & Michael Turk in observance of the yahrtzeit of Mindy's brother, Lenny Kanarek (ליפמען בן יצחק צבי) on 18 Tevet, and in observance of the yahrtzeit of Mindy's mother, Rhoda Kanarek (רעשא זלדה בת יהודה אליהו הלוי) on 20 Tevet.
