Our building is open to the vaccinated only. All persons currently eligible in New York City for COVID-19 vaccination are required to provide proof of vaccination in order to enter the Sixth Street Community Synagogue building, or attend any events at the synagogue.  As eligibility changes (extended to groups such as children, booster shots become available/recommended), all persons eligible will have two months from the time they become eligible to demonstrate proof of vaccination. If you have not already submitted a copy of your vaccination card, we ask that you bring vaccine verification to synagogue. We expect everyone present to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth while inside the building.

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00 PM. Will meet this week for Foundations of Shabbat.

Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks' yahrzeit was observed beautifully in our synagogue this past Monday night. We are particularly grateful to Professor Moshe Halbertal for his beautiful and insightful words, Rabbi Joe Wolfson who organized the event, and all the Downtown Vaad leaders and congregants who participated in person and online. Recordings from the event will be made available shortly.

To mark Rabbi Lord Sacks' upcoming yahrzeit, we will host an evening of Rabbi Sacks' Torah on Monday October 25th. This Downtown Vaad event will feature chavruta learning of materials specially prepared for the event by the Office Of Rabbi Sacks as well as reflections on Rabbi Sacks and his Torah from educators, rabbis and scholars of the downtown Jewish community.

 

This event is restricted to the fully vaccinated. Masks required.

Shabbat Afternoon Services are Back! For the foreseeable future, we will be davening Shabbat Mincha and Maariv together with Rabbi Joe Wolfson and his students. Seudah Shelishit will generally be offered, but its availability and location will depend upon local COVID positivity rates and weather. This week's Seudah Shelishit will limited to the fully vaccinated.

The event will feature chavruta study of materials specially prepared for the event by the Office of Rabbi Sacks as well as reflections on Rabbi Sacks and his Torah from educators, rabbis and scholars of the downtown Jewish community. We wish a Mazal Tov to Agita & Jonathan Falik upon Ryan's Bar Mitzvah.

 

With sadness we note the passing of Rabbi Dr. Moshe Dovid Tendler, Rosh Yeshiva and Professor of Biology at Yeshiva University, and Rabbi of the Community Synagogue of Monsey. Rabbi Dr. Tendler was the personification of Torah u'Madda; an outstanding Torah scholar, a devoted student of Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, and the son-in-law of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein. May his family and students be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion & Jerusalem.

Our first days of Sukkot were magnificent. We are especially grateful to Choni Bellino and Dr. Matan Leibovich for their flawless Torah reading, to David Lessman for his preparation of our beautiful sukkot, and to Vincenzo Aiosa and staff for their dedicated support inside and outside of our building.

 

Hoshana Rabba Shacharit will be held Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM in the Main Sanctuary. Hoshanot bundles will be made available. Hoshana Rabba on Sixth Street is surprisingly efficient and always beautiful. Please consider joining us.

 

Women of Sixth Street: If you are able to read Torah at the Women's Torah Reading, please let us know ASAP. As in the past, Rabbi Bellino is happy to make recordings of the reading for anyone that would like to learn. The service will begin at 10:30 AM on Wednesday AM in the Beit Midrash, and all women are invited to receive Aliyot.

Yom Kippur on Sixth Street was a wonderful success. More than 300 people - vaccinated and masked - were welcomed over the course of the day. Services were beautiful and efficient. We are especially grateful to our cantors, Meir Shapiro and Neil Kitainik for their beautiful and perfectly-timed davening. They skillfully and precisely moved text along as they moved us, inspiring us with beautiful and thoughtful moments of prayer and song. Our classes are being held on Zoom. For those of you who do not know, Zoom is a remote conferencing service that facilitates meetings online, by video and by phone. Greetings Friends,

 

Thank You. Yom Kippur on Sixth Street was a wonderful success. More than 300 people - vaccinated and masked - were welcomed over the course of the day. Services were beautiful and efficient.

Kol Nidrei Campaign

Dear friends,

Here's the short version: I need your help to rebuild this unique synagogue. You can click here to participate in the Kol Nidrei Appeal. Then go back to hydrating.

If you need more convincing, here goes: Despite a chaotic and unpredictable year, the Sixth Street Community Synagogue is still very much a center of thoughtful and fun Modern Orthodox Judaism. It continues to thrive online and at COVID-careful services (Six-Feet Synagogue). This year has included several essential and aesthetic improvements to a 174 year old building, including critical electrical and plumbing work as well as the renovation of pews (of which there are many!). Classes are thoughtful and quirky. Davening is beautiful and efficient. Kiddush is actually delicious, and a bit of a party. So much better than the synagogue you grew up in.

But like every other institution, the synagogue requires your help to return to its pre-COVID level of functioning. The building needs more protection and care, additional professional roles must be developed, and services and events that attract a broad audience must be offered. The synagogue must - not only make up for the last year and half - it must exceed its former glory.

As you know, this project of Teshuva - the return to our higher selves and to God - requires that we re-evaluate, re-prioritize, and then re-affirm our commitment to those things that truly matter. I hope that our synagogue is on your list and that you are able to partner with me in its great revitalization and success.

Masks must be worn (properly) by all in attendance. The only exception to our mask policy applies to our Baalei Tefilla and speakers. They have all been recently tested and will remove their masks only when alone on the Bima. We insist that all ark-honorees stand far to the side when not negotiating the ark.

 

Your names may be found on your seats. There are maps when you walk into the building and also in the sanctuary. We strongly recommend that you consult the online maps/listing found here to familiarize yourself with your location.

 

If you have already asked to sit in the balcony, you will not find your name on either map, but your name should be on the listing.

 

If you will not be using your seat, please let us know ASAP.

 

Make sure that your family/friends are accounted for. Of course mistakes creep in, so please let us know if there are any problems.

 
The balcony will be mostly empty and is a reasonable option for those of you that would like some extra room.

We are especially grateful to our Baalei Tefila (Neil Kitainik and Meir Shapiro), Gabbaim (Elie Yudewitz and Choni Bellino), Choni Bellino and Keshet Bellino for helping to prepare the sanctuary, Vincenzo Aiosa and his team for their work continued care and enhancement of our building, and to Rabbi Joe Wolfson for his beautiful sermon on the second day.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Erin Sharfman & Alexander Sacks upon their recent engagement.

 

This Saturday Night is the First Night of Selichot. The service will begin at 10:30 PM and will be led by Meir Shapiro. This service is restricted to those who are vaccinated. (Unvaccinated children under 12 are welcome, but must remain with a parent at all times). Masks are mandatory for all. Selichot will also be broadcast on Zoom. A PDF of the service is available here.

 

The High Holy Days are just over a week  away. Our High Holy Day Services are by RSVP only and limited to the fully-vaccinated. (This requirement excludes children under 12 who are welcome, but must sit with their parents in the sanctuary or distance play - while masked - in the social hall.) Additionally masks must be worn by all in attendance.

 

We are presently finalizing the seating for Rosh HaShana. If you plan on joining us, it is imperative that you let us know ASAP. For more information click here.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Rabbi Bellino and his students upon the completion of Tractate Avot. It only took two entire summers. 

 

The High Holy Days are three weeks away. it Unfortunately, the current and expected impact of COVID and its variants remains less predictable, and so we are carefully monitoring this constantly-changing path and frequently consulting with our medical advisors. As of now we plan on convening High Holy Day services, but with some important adjustments.

  • Attendance will be limited to the fully-vaccinated. (This requirement excludes children under 12 who are welcome, but must sit with their parents in the sanctuary or distance play - while masked - in the social hall.)
  • Masks must be worn by all in attendance.
  • Less essential parts of the service will be skipped.

We may have to limit the number of people that we can accommodate and depending on demand may have to offer multiple services, as we did last year. Please help us get a better sense of your intentions, so that we may plan appropriately.


For now, we simply ask you - our members and friends: Do you plan on attending our Rosh HaShana and/or Yom Kippur services? How many will be in your party? Do you feel that you can commit to our community practices and expectations? Would you appreciate outdoor Shofar services? Please communicate your High Holy Day intentions (both affirmative and negative) - and any questions or concerns. Sooner, rather than later.

Dear Friends,

 

This Shabbat we will exercise greater vigilance and return to wearing masks. We expect everyone present, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth while inside. Kiddushes will be held outdoors.

 

We are carefully monitoring the constantly-changing path of Covid-19 and frequently consulting with our medical advisors. This decision is largely based on NYC's recent increase in positivity, in anticipation of a larger attendance this Shabbat (Mazels!), and in preparation for the High Holy Days.
