Kol Nidrei Campaign

Dear Friends,

I hope that you are all well and hydrating this Erev Yom Kippur. Here's the short version of my appeal: I need your help to rebuild this unique synagogue. Click here to participate in the Kol Nidrei Appeal and then go back to your water bottles.

If you need more convincing, here goes the longer version: Despite another chaotic and unpredictable year, the Sixth Street Community Synagogue is still very much a locus of thoughtful and fun Modern Orthodox Judaism. This year has included several essential and aesthetic improvements to our 175 year old building. Classes are accessible and thoughtful. Davening is beautiful and efficient. Kiddush is actually delicious, and the beer is well curated.

But like every other institution, the synagogue requires your help to return to its pre-COVID level of functioning. The building needs more protection and care, additional professional roles must be developed, and services and events that attract a broad audience must be offered. The synagogue must - not only return to - but exceed its former glory.

As you know, this project of Teshuva - the return to our higher selves and to God - requires that we re-evaluate, re-prioritize, and then re-affirm our commitment to those things that truly matter. I hope that our synagogue is on your list and that you are able to partner with me in its great revitalization and success.

With the High Holy Days just about a month away, it is now time to begin our preparations for our predictably beautiful and efficient services. For now, we are asking you - our members and friends - to help us prepare. Do you intend on joining us for Rosh HaShana and/or Yom Kippur services? How many will be in your party? What - if any - COVID precautions would you like to be set in place? (We are strongly considering a mask-only section.) Would you appreciate outdoor Shofar services? Please communicate your High Holy Day intentions - and any questions or concerns - by replying to this email.

Family membership includes two free seats. Individual membership includes one free seat. Additional seats for members are $125 and all seats for non-members are $250.

We offer blessings of consolation to the Nachmani Family upon the passing of Eli Nachmani, beloved husband of Joan, father of Michael (Michelle), father of Jonathan (Becky) Nachmani, and grandfather of Ethan, Katie, Emily, Ava, Benjamin, and Charlie.

The graveside funeral will be held tomorrow morning, Friday July 29th at 10:30 AM at Beth El Cemetery in Paramus (735 Forrest Avenue, Paramus NJ). The funeral may be viewed by livestream by clicking here.

Our weekday classes are being held on Zoom. For those of you who do not know, Zoom is a remote conferencing service that facilitates meetings online, by video and by phone. A useful instructional video may be found here. We strongly encourage you to download the free app to your phones and/or computers and then click the meeting links that we provide. If you do not have the technology to participate over the Internet, you may simply dial in. We will provide the links and numbers in a separate email as well as PDFs of any relevant class material. MASEKHET AVOT: An academic approach the work serves as an introduction to Rabbinic Judaism. Shabbat Afternoons, One hour before Mincha.

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00 PM.

Downtown Community

We are thrilled to have Shifra Friedman as the Yoetzet Halacha for the downtown community. Yoetzet Shifra is available to answer questions related to Toharat HaMishpacha and may be reached by phone at (646) 598-1080 and by email. Click here to read our recent e-mail about her appointment.

Dear Friends,

With the new fiscal year beginning on June 1st, it is once again time for us to encourage membership, asking you to formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

Should you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments. You can easily arrange this through our website and/or with the help of our office.
If you have recently paid membership, please ignore this request. If you - for whatever reason - generally pay membership at another time of the year, you may continue to do so.
If you are having financial difficulty meeting the membership dues obligations, please contact our Rabbi or Treasurer to discuss alternate financial arrangements. All conversations will be kept confidential.

Our building is open, but to the vaccinated only. All persons currently eligible in New York City for COVID-19 vaccination are required to provide proof of vaccination in order to enter the Sixth Street Community Synagogue building, or attend any events at the synagogue. As eligibility changes (extended to groups such as children, booster shots become available/recommended), all persons eligible will have two months from the time they become eligible to demonstrate proof of vaccination. If you have not already submitted a copy of your vaccination card, we ask that you bring vaccine verification to synagogue. If you have tested positive and have recently been in synagogue, be sure to contact Rabbi Bellino who - along with advisors - is monitoring community positivity. (Your health status will be kept confidential).

We are on Summer Schedule! That means that Friday Night Services will be held at 7:00 PM until September 16th! (Except on the first night of Passover).

This Shabbat we welcome Rabbi Leead Staller who will deliver the Shabbat Sermon. We are very excited to collaborate with both Rabbi Staller and Shoshana Bachrach as they have recently been hired to replace Rabbi Joe Wolfson and Corinne Shmuel as the next OU-JLIC Directors at NYU.
