Book of Remembrance 5780

09/06/2019 10:43:50 AM

The High Holy Day season is a time of repentance and atonement, contemplation and prayer. One of the strongest emotional moments that we experience this period, and especially on Yom Kippur, is the recalling of the memory of those loved ones who have meant so much to us and have gone on to eternal life.

To enhance the Yizkor Service, our synagogue will again assemble our own Book of Remembrance. This is an opportunity for us all to remember those people (relatives, friends, teachers, etc.) who greatly impacted our lives. To view last year's book, click here.

The booklet will contain:

1. The complete Yizkor Service and assorted readings and psalms
2. Your sponsored pages, half-pages, quarter pages and/or entry listings of those that you chose to honor and remember
3. A message from Rabbi Bellino

We urge all our members and friends to take part in our Book of Remembrance.

The final date of submission for all entries must be no later than October 2, 2019.

Please submit (English/Hebrew) names, relation, and yahretzeit dates. For full, half and quarter page entries, please consider adding a brief statement.

FULL PAGE…………………$180
HALF PAGE…………………$ 108
QUARTER PAGE……………$ 54
LISTING (EACH ENTRY)……$ 10

If you wish to make the same dedication as last year, please let us know.

Please send all entries and any questions to info@sixthstreetsynagogue.org

We thank you in advance for your participation in this meaningful project.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Steven Strauss on his Aufruf this Shabbat, and his upcoming wedding to Chana Shechter.

Last week, we buried our friend, Eric Johnson (אהרן שמחה בן אברהם). Eric was a gentle, thoughtful, and kind person who will be deeply missed. If you are considering making a donation in Eric's memory, we recommend that you support one (or all) of those causes/institutions that were important to him. There were very many of them, but here are several:

  • Our Synagogue. One of Eric's two downtown shuls.
  • Knock Knock Give a Sock. KKGS brings communities together in order to help those who are experiencing homelessness. Their motto is Help your neighbor, Meet your neighbor, Know your neighbor. In addition to providing needed resources by collecting socks, they encourage personal and meaningful interactions with the homeless.
  • The Stanton Street Shul. Eric's other downtown shul.
  • Lincoln Square Synagogue. Eric's uptown shul.
  • The Manhattan Eruv. This is how Eric was able to carry Scotch on Shabbat. You can make the donation to the Eruv here. Rabbi Bellino will forward the amount and any note you include.
  • NJOP.  The Torah organization where Eric studied and flourished.

Gold Leaf Campaign: In honor of our synagogue's 80th anniversary this year, we encourage community members to sponsor Gold Leafs on the Tree of Life outside of the Main Sanctuary doors. As a nod to the synagogue's traditional history, coupled with the recent revitalization, let's take this opportunity to commemorate the many happy events and milestones celebrated in our synagogue, such as Graduations, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Marriages, Birth of Children, or any other momentous event. Each leaf can have up to 4 lines. The cost for each leaf is $118. Please submit payments and text by August 30th so the plaques can be finalized before Rosh Hashanah. Submit text and payment on the donate page (use the charge type 'Gold Leaf Campaign'), and email Annie Watman a copy of your text. Please join us in this campaign to celebrate the revitalization of our shul and the joy celebrated within these walls. Contact Annie Watman with any questions.

Sixth Street Parents Committee: Our Sixth Street parents committee is planning a number of events for our youngest members and the larger community, and we want you to know about them! The Sixth Street Parents Google group is where events are publicized, meetings are called, and babysitters' contacts are shared. If you'd like to be added to the group, please email Alan Feder or Julia Salant.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are also looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. FILM DESCRIPTION

When the Smoke Clears: A Story of Brotherhood, Resilience and Hope tells the true stories of young Israeli soldiers whose injuries leave them fighting for the strength to live. Making breakthroughs and finding meaning by reaching out to those in need, they discover that what didn’t kill them really did make them stronger.

The film shares the accounts of Gil, Ofer, and Elad – young war veterans whose unthinkable battle experiences leave them with life-altering mental and physical scars. Returning to society, their trauma disconnects them from all they once valued, turning their lives upside down.

When all seems lost, a revolutionary idea gives them the hope, courage, tools and community to survive, and to embrace their identities as heroes both on and off the battlefield. Banding together in a family of wounded soldiers, they learn to face their obstacles together and discover that in conquering their pain, they might have more to offer than ever before.

When the Smoke Clears follows this band of brothers during the darkest times of their lives, and proves that massive growth and healing can come through giving to others, transforming them into heroes in their own lives and in the lives of those around them.

Please visit the film's website for more information.

Contact Annie Watman with any questions.

Community Security: We are actively working to enhance our sense of safety and security. We are grateful to Sara Liss and the larger security team for taking on this responsibility. To find out more and to become involved, please contact Sara.

Membership Drive: This Sunday, June 30th, Is Last Day For Last Year's Rates

06/26/2019 02:45:49 PM

Jun26

Dear friends,

Our new fiscal year began on June 1st, and so we once again encourage your membership - to ask that you formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

This year, with increased operating costs, including security, we are forced to raise the membership dues for the coming year. If you renew your membership though by this Sunday, June 30th, you can still pay at last year's rate.

We continue to experience a growing community, delicious kiddushes, meaningful services, insightful classes, festive parties, engaging children’s programming, and respected and inspiring speakers. We continue to make essential repairs and aesthetic improvements to our 173 year old building. We are most grateful to the many of you who have stepped up to join our leadership, attend our services, contribute financially, strengthen our community through your presence, and make our synagogue a true center of thoughtful Orthodox Judaism.

Membership dues go a long way in making all of this possible. Won’t you please share in our great legacy and help us continue this impressive revitalization? There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.

Membership Level Before June 30 After June 30
Family (Includes 2 RH/YK Tickets) $900 $1000
Individual (Includes 1 RH/YK Ticket) $500 $550
Associate  $300 $300
Student $150 $150
  • For Membership Renewal, please click here
  • For New Members, please click here

You can also Venmo us @sixthstreetsynagogue, or mail a check to 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003.

  • Should you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments. You can easily arrange this through our website or with the help of our office.
  • If you have recently paid membership, please ignore this request. If you - for whatever reason - generally pay membership at another time of the year, you may continue to do so, or you may pay now and preserve the old rate.
  • If you are having financial difficulty meeting the membership dues obligations, please contact our Rabbi or Treasurer to discuss alternate financial arrangements. All conversations will be kept completely confidential.

Thank you for being a part of our great success,

Elie Yudewitz, President
Alan Schwartz, Treasurer
Gavriel Bellino, Rabbi

THIS SHABBAT: Community Security Presentation/Father's Day Kiddush

06/14/2019 12:23:23 PM

Jun14

This Shabbat, June 15th, our synagogue community will welcome our security consultant, Amit Bigelman of Bigos Security Solutions. After services and before our Father's Day kiddush, Amit will address the entire congregation. He will present a pragmatic, sensible Emergency Action Plan (EAP) to better prepare us in case of emergency. This EAP will guide the various elements of our bustling synagogue and coordinate the activity of our newly-formed Security Team and our various staff. It is therefore critical that our active community members make every effort to attend and internalize Amit's address.

Additionally, Tot Shabbat will be held that morning as well. Before Tot Shabbat begins at 10:45 AM, Amit will meet with the parents and with the Tot Shabbat leader to brief them on the EAP as it relates specifically to the children.

Please make every effort to attend this important event.

For more information, please contact Jeremy Watman at jeremy.watman@gmail.com. More information about Amit Bigelman can be found here.

This Shabbat is our Seventh Annual Father's Day Kiddush!!!

There's still time to be a sponsor! For $54 you can be named as a contributor. The names of your sons, fathers, grandfathers, teachers, or virtually anyone you choose, will be listed. Please specify "in honor of" or "in memory of" in the notes when you make your payment. You may list as many people as you wish. This list will be read aloud in shul, as well as distributed at the Kiddush.

Tot Shabbat meets this Shabbat, June 15th, and next week, June 22nd. This week, before Tot Shabbat begins at 10:45 AM, our security consultant Amit Bigelman (see above) will meet with the parents and Leat to brief us on the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) as it relates specifically to the children. Since so many of us stay with the children during the program and otherwise supervise downstairs, it’s important that parents have a strong understanding of the EAP. Please make every effort to be there by 10:30 AM so Amit can brief us all. As always, 10:00 AM free play, 10:45 AM program starts.

This Shabbat, June 15th, marks the 115th anniversary of the General Slocum disaster, in which an estimated 1,200 people drowned after their ship caught fire and sank in the East River. The victims were mostly women and children from the St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the congregation which worshipped in the building that is now home to our synagogue. This was the worst disaster in New York City history before 9/11.

All Shabbat Services are held in our main sanctuary.

Membership Drive 2019

06/13/2019 01:11:45 PM

Jun13

Dear friends,

With a new fiscal year having begun on June 1st, it is once again time for us to encourage membership - to ask that you formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

With increased operating costs, including security, we are forced to raise the membership dues for the coming year. If you renew your membership though before June 30th, you can still pay at last year's rate.

Community Security Shabbat: On Shabbat, June 15th, we will welcome our security consultant, Amit Bigelman. After services and before our Fathers' Day kiddush, Amit will address the entire congregation and present a pragmatic, sensible Emergency Action Plan (EAP). In case of emergency, this plan will guide the various elements of our bustling synagogue and coordinate the activity of our newly-formed Security Team and our staff. Our open, warm, and welcoming atmosphere forces us to face reality. It's our collective and individual responsibility to be as prepared as reasonably possible in the event we face those who wish to harm us. It is therefore critical that our active community members make every effort to attend and internalize Amit's address. To learn more, please contact Jeremy Watman at jeremy.watman@gmail.com. More info about Amit Bigelman can be found here

Tot Shabbat Resumes NEXT Shabbat, Erev Shavuot June 8, and will meet three weeks in a row: June 8th, 15th, and 22nd, when it will end for the Summer season. Please join us for open play in the Beit Medrash at 10:00 AM, followed by the formal Tot Shabbat program promptly at 10:45 AM. Parent participation and feedback helps us create a nurturing and educational environment for our youngest members--so join us on June 8!

Sixth Street Parents Committee: Our Sixth Street parents committee is planning a number of events for our youngest members and the larger community, and we want you to know about them! The Sixth Street Parents Google group is where events are publicized, meetings are called, and babysitters' contacts are shared. If you'd like to be added to the group, please email Jeremy.

To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Shabbat Kiddush for sponsorship is June 8th (Shabbat Bamidbar).
