To make a payment, please do so here, send in a check, or Venmo us: @SixthStreetSynagogue. Be sure to specify that this donation is for the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund and for the Eruv.

Kol Nidre Appeal: We are grateful to all those who have already paid their pledges. To pay your Kol Nidre pledge, click here, or Venmo us: @SixthStreetSynagogue, or send a check to: Sixth Street Community Synagogue, 325 East Sixth Street, New York, NY, 10003.

Book of Remembrance 5780

09/06/2019 10:43:50 AM

Sep6

The High Holy Day season is a time of repentance and atonement, contemplation and prayer. One of the strongest emotional moments that we experience this period, and especially on Yom Kippur, is the recalling of the memory of those loved ones who have meant so much to us and have gone on to eternal life.

To enhance the Yizkor Service, our synagogue will again assemble our own Book of Remembrance. This is an opportunity for us all to remember those people (relatives, friends, teachers, etc.) who greatly impacted our lives. To view last year's book, click here.

The booklet will contain:

1. The complete Yizkor Service and assorted readings and psalms
2. Your sponsored pages, half-pages, quarter pages and/or entry listings of those that you chose to honor and remember
3. A message from Rabbi Bellino

We urge all our members and friends to take part in our Book of Remembrance.

The final date of submission for all entries must be no later than October 2, 2019.

Please submit (English/Hebrew) names, relation, and yahretzeit dates. For full, half and quarter page entries, please consider adding a brief statement.

FULL PAGE…………………$180
HALF PAGE…………………$ 108
QUARTER PAGE……………$ 54
LISTING (EACH ENTRY)……$ 10

If you wish to make the same dedication as last year, please let us know.

Please send all entries and any questions to info@sixthstreetsynagogue.org

We thank you in advance for your participation in this meaningful project.

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to the Zilberman/Grossman/Blackston family on the birth, Brit, and naming of a boy, Reuben Zachary (ראובן זכריה), born to Dr. Meredith Grossman & David Blackston.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Alina & Sam Eckstein on their recent wedding.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Steven Strauss on his Aufruf this Shabbat, and his upcoming wedding to Chana Shechter.

Last week, we buried our friend, Eric Johnson (אהרן שמחה בן אברהם). Eric was a gentle, thoughtful, and kind person who will be deeply missed. If you are considering making a donation in Eric's memory, we recommend that you support one (or all) of those causes/institutions that were important to him. There were very many of them, but here are several:

  • Our Synagogue. One of Eric's two downtown shuls.
  • Knock Knock Give a Sock. KKGS brings communities together in order to help those who are experiencing homelessness. Their motto is Help your neighbor, Meet your neighbor, Know your neighbor. In addition to providing needed resources by collecting socks, they encourage personal and meaningful interactions with the homeless.
  • The Stanton Street Shul. Eric's other downtown shul.
  • Lincoln Square Synagogue. Eric's uptown shul.
  • The Manhattan Eruv. This is how Eric was able to carry Scotch on Shabbat. You can make the donation to the Eruv here. Rabbi Bellino will forward the amount and any note you include.

FILM DESCRIPTION

When the Smoke Clears: A Story of Brotherhood, Resilience and Hope tells the true stories of young Israeli soldiers whose injuries leave them fighting for the strength to live. Making breakthroughs and finding meaning by reaching out to those in need, they discover that what didn’t kill them really did make them stronger.

The film shares the accounts of Gil, Ofer, and Elad – young war veterans whose unthinkable battle experiences leave them with life-altering mental and physical scars. Returning to society, their trauma disconnects them from all they once valued, turning their lives upside down.

When all seems lost, a revolutionary idea gives them the hope, courage, tools and community to survive, and to embrace their identities as heroes both on and off the battlefield. Banding together in a family of wounded soldiers, they learn to face their obstacles together and discover that in conquering their pain, they might have more to offer than ever before.

When the Smoke Clears follows this band of brothers during the darkest times of their lives, and proves that massive growth and healing can come through giving to others, transforming them into heroes in their own lives and in the lives of those around them.

Please visit the film's website for more information.

Gold Leaf Campaign: In honor of our synagogue's 80th anniversary this year, we encourage community members to sponsor Gold Leafs on the Tree of Life outside of the Main Sanctuary doors. As a nod to the synagogue's traditional history, coupled with the recent revitalization, let's take this opportunity to commemorate the many happy events and milestones celebrated in our synagogue, such as Graduations, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Marriages, Birth of Children, or any other momentous event. Each leaf can have up to 4 lines. The cost for each leaf is $118. Please submit payments and text by August 30th so the plaques can be finalized before Rosh Hashanah. Submit text and payment on the donate page (use the charge type 'Gold Leaf Campaign'), and email Annie Watman a copy of your text. Please join us in this campaign to celebrate the revitalization of our shul and the joy celebrated within these walls. Contact Annie Watman with any questions.

Community Security: We are actively working to enhance our sense of safety and security. We are grateful to Sara Liss and the larger security team for taking on this responsibility. To find out more and to become involved, please contact Sara.
