News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We are grateful to Alan Feder who will read his Bar Mitzva Parsha this Shabbat.

Next Shabbat, March 2nd: Tot Shabbat and Musical Havdalah + Kids Sing-along: Children and their parents are invited to Tot Shabbat next week, Parshat Vayakhel, March 2nd. Please join us for open play in the Beit Medrash at 10 AM, followed by the formal Tot Shabbat program promptly at 10:45 AM. Purim is in 4 Weeks! Join us on March 20th, with Megillah Reading (at 7:30 PM), immediately followed by our Purim Party. We on Sixth Street do Purim really well, but to do so requires planning. Please consider helping us with our Purim Chaos, as well as participating in our Purim Charity Campaign.

Purim Chaos: Our yearly Purim chaos would not be anywhere near as chaotic, were it not for your generous financial support. As literally all the Seforim say, "silly swag, red solo cups, and laser lights don't pay for themselves." For more information, please click to our Purim Chaos page.

Purim Charity Campaign: Matanot L'evyonim is arguably the most important Mitzvah of Purim. This year, we are again proud to partner with Rabbi Zvi Romm of the Bialystoker Synagogue, Rabbi Joe Wolfson of JLIC-NYU and the NYU community, and the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network, as well as Knock Knock Give a Sock, in providing gifts to those in the region who truly need our assistance. To make a donation click here.

2018 Tax Letter: You may have received a tax letter from us listing all of your 2018 tax-deductible contributions to the synagogue. If you have any questions about the statement, or feel that some contributions were not listed, please contact us at 212-473-3665, or email us.

Sixth Street Parents Committee: Our Sixth Street parents committee is planning a number of events for our youngest members and the larger community, and we want you to know about them! The Sixth Street Parents Google group is where events are publicized, meetings are called, and babysitters' contacts are shared. If you'd like to be added to the group, please email Jeremy.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Choni Bellino who will read for us this Shabbat. The next available Mincha leining is on March 9th (the afternoon reading is Vayikra). We are also looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Shabbat Kiddush for sponsorship is March 9th (Shabbat Pekudei).

January 9 - Lecture: Robert Moses, Jane Jacobs and the Struggle for Lower Manhattan
Jane Jacobs called it a ballet. Neighborhoods had density. Buildings had character. Streets had eyes. But by the 1960’s, led by Robert Moses, the ballet of the city came to a grinding halt, replaced by the superblock, the highrise, and the highway. The wrecking ball sealed the fate of neighborhoods.  What were its implications on NY Jewish life in the 20th century and how did decisions made then still impact us today? Join us on January 9th at 7:00 PM for a conversation lead by professor, author and real estate expert, Jason Haber.

Dear Friends,

I know these emails are the worst, so here's the short version... If you are able to extend your end-of-year generosity to include our unique synagogue, please do so now.

Your generosity would go a long way in sustaining our unique brand of kind, thoughtful, and "extra" Orthodox Judaism. By "kind" I mean our welcoming atmosphere, our spirit (and demand) of inclusion, as well as our numerous charitable efforts and support. With "thoughtful," I refer to our academic style classes and sermons, our beautiful art, our wonderful children's programming, as well as our carefully curated visiting scholars. Finally, by "extra" I mean our renewal of our 175 year old building, our patently unique endless swag, our hilarious internet presence, our delcious Friday Night Kiddushes, our glowstick guitar havdalahs, and everything else that makes our synagogue like no other.

To make a contribution, please go the synagogue’s donation page. This is also the appropriate time to honor your open commitments to the synagogue and to pay any outstanding balances. Please remember that in order to maximize your 2018 tax benefits, contributions and payments must be made no later than 11:59 PM.

Thank you for your generous support and commitment.

To even more "Extra Orthodoxy" in 2019,
Gavriel Z. Bellino
Rabbi

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We offer Blessings of Consolation to Elie Yudewitz on the passing of his grandfather, Bernard Danis, דב בערל בן טוביה.

We offer Blessings of Consolation to our friend, Mindy Turk, on the passing of her brother, Lenny Kanarek.

This past week we had the honor of hosting Drisha's Winter Week of Learning, which focused on the thought of Nachmanides. We are grateful to: Dr. Aaron Koller, Neesa Berezin-Bahr, and Yehudis Isenberg of Drisha for all their work in planning and organizing the week; to all the presenters: Dr. Aaron Koller, Rabbi David Silber, Jennifer Seligman, Dr. Yonatan Brafman, Dr. Michelle Levine, and Dr. Joel Hecker; and to everyone who joined us and participated. We are grateful to Drisha for sharing thoughtful Torah and a lovely community.

End-of-the-Year Giving: As 2018 rapidly comes to a close, you may be planning your end-of-the-year charitable contributions. Please consider including the Sixth Street Synagogue in your year-end giving. To make a contribution, please go the synagogue’s donate pageThis is also a great time to honor your open commitments to the synagogue and to pay any outstanding balances. If you do have a balance, it might be better to resolve this before the end of 2018. And it is certainly helpful for the synagogue at this time of the year, when cash flow is a bit restricted. To see if you have an outstanding balance, please check your account on the synagogue website or contact the synagogue office.

Henry Shelly Shapiro is at Riverside Premier Rehabilitation and Healing Center on the Upper West Side for an indefinite stay. Any visitor from the Sixth Street Synagogue would brighten his day with a short visit next time you're uptown. The Riverside Center is located at 150 Riverside Drive (at 87th Street).

The Downtown Community's yearly financial Eruv obligation is $36K. These funds are raised by several synagogues and institutions, as well by many individuals and families that make use of the Eruv. How much to give is certainly up to you, and any donation is appreciated. To give you some context: If 200 families/individuals were to give $180, this year's fundraising effort would be over. To make a payment, please do so here, or send in a check to the office. If you send a check, be sure to specify that this donation is for the Eruv.

We are grateful to Neil Kitainik who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on January 12th (the afternoon reading is Beshalach). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading in the near future.

The next available Shabbat Kiddush for sponsorship is Shabbat Bo, January 12th.

Our annual Children’s Chanukah Party this past Sunday was super fun and well-attended. We are very grateful to Annie & Jeremy Watman for all their work in planning the event.

Last week's Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton with Dr. Malka Simkovich was thought-provoking and entertaining. We are grateful to Dr. Simkovich for sharing her scholarship with us, and to Ellen Cherrick and Alan Schwartz for sponsoring the Friday night Community Dinner.

This Shabbat, we bid farewell to our friend and lamb bacon provider, David Waxman. David is also our Baal Koreh.

To make a payment, please do so here, or send in a check to the office. If you send a check, be sure to specify that this donation is for the Eruv.

Sixth Street Parents Committee: Our Sixth Street parents committee is planning a number of events for our youngest members and the larger community, and we want you to know about them!

Next Thursday: Book Event - Dr. Malka Simkovich on Second Temple Literature - Come celebrate the publication of Dr. Malka Simkovich’s new book - Discovering Second Temple Literature: The Scriptures and Stories That Shaped Early Judaism. We will hear from Dr. Simkovich (Drisha Faculty member and Professor of Jewish Studies at Catholic Theological Union), and Dr. Lawrence Schiffman (Professor of Hebrew & Judaic Studies at NYU), who will explore the Jewish literature and communities of Alexandria and the Dead Sea Scrolls in Greek and Roman times, as Jews navigated as a minority through worlds dominated by powerful cultures. This event has been sponsored by Drisha, The Jewish Publication Society, and our synagogue. Please register on the event page.

Next Shabbat: Shabbat Scholar Dr. Malka Simkovich - November 30-December 1: Please join us on Shabbat Vayeshev (November 30 - December 1) when we welcome as our Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Malka Simkovich, the Crown-Ryan Chair of Jewish Studies and director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies program at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, who will speak on the Chanukah story for grown-ups, Joseph as hero of the Diaspora, and women's leadership in Orthodoxy.

We are grateful to Elie Yudewitz who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on December 1st (the afternoon reading is Mikeitz). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to prepare a reading.

Recycling: Please make sure that all bottles, cans, and tins, are placed in the blue recycling bin in the social hall. We can be fined by the city for not separating out our garbage for recycling, and your help will save our maintenance staff a lot of work, and the synagogue some money.

The next available Shabbat Kiddush for sponsorship is Shabbat Vayechi, December 22nd.
