News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

This past Sunday, we had the honor of hosting the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education for a day of Shiva Asar B'Tamuz programming. We are grateful to Rabbi David Silber and Rabbi Daniel Reifman for their presentations; to Neesa Berezin-Bahr for her work in organizing the program; and to everyone who joined us and participated.

Gold Leaf Campaign: In honor of our synagogue's 80th anniversary this year, we encourage community members to sponsor Gold Leafs on the Tree of Life outside of the Main Sanctuary doors. As a nod to the synagogue's traditional history, coupled with the recent revitalization, let's take this opportunity to commemorate the many happy events and milestones celebrated in our synagogue, such as Graduations, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Marriages, Birth of Children, or any other momentous event. Each leaf can have up to 4 lines. The cost for each leaf is $118. Please submit payments and text by August 30th so the plaques can be finalized before Rosh Hashanah. Submit text and payment on the donate page (use the charge type 'Gold Leaf Campaign'), and email Annie Watman a copy of your text (Annie.watman@gmail.com). Please join us in this campaign to celebrate the revitalization of our shul and the joy celebrated within these walls. Contact Annie Watman with any questions.

Community Security: We are actively working to enhance our sense of safety and security. We are grateful to Sara Liss and the larger security team for taking on this responsibility. To find out more and to become involved, please contact Sara at sarailiss@gmail.com or Jeremy Watman at jeremy.watman@gmail.com.

THIS MONDAY: My Body. Whose Decision? A Panel Discussion with JOFA - On Monday, July 29th, at 7:30 PM, we welcome JOFA, the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance, for a panel discussion of Jewish, legal, and medical perspectives on reproductive rights, featuring: Dr. Elana Stein Hain, Scholar in Residence and Director of Faculty at the Shalom Hartman Institute of North America, Gail Katz, JOFA board member and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel of Danaher Corporation's Dental Platform, and Dr. Susan Lobel, founder of Metropolitan Reproductive Medicine, and moderated by Dr. Michal Raucher of Rutgers University Department of Jewish Studies. Please click here to register.

Membership Drive: Our new fiscal year began on June 1st, and so we once again encourage your membership - to ask that you formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

You can also Venmo us @sixthstreetsynagogue, or mail a check to 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003. If you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments, which can be easily set up through our website. Should you have any questions, please contact our treasurer, Alan Schwartz, or our Rabbi.

Sixth Street Parents Committee: Our Sixth Street parents committee is planning a number of events for our youngest members and the larger community, and we want you to know about them! The Sixth Street Parents Google group is where events are publicized, meetings are called, and babysitters' contacts are shared. If you'd like to be added to the group, please email Jeremy.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are also looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next Shabbat Kiddush available to sponsor is August 24th (Shabbat Eikev).

We like to think we're different. Everyone from the traditionally Orthodox to the occasionally observant feels at home here - 365 days a year. We hope you do too.
