Your Annual Commitment

06/16/2021 03:32:40 PM

Jun16

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! The new fiscal year began on June 1st, so it is once again time for us to encourage membership, asking you to formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

Membership dues go a long way in supporting our operating expenses, enhancing our thoughtful and unique programming, and allowing us to make many essential repairs and aesthetic improvements to our 175-year-old building. After a year like no other, your partnership in our rebuilding and revitalization is more important than ever.

There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.

Membership Level
Family $1000
Individual $550
Associate  $300
Student $150
  • For Membership Renewal, please click here
  • For New Members, please click here

You can also Venmo us @sixthstreetsynagogue, or mail a check to 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003.

  • Should you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments. You can easily arrange this through our website and/or with the help of our office.
  • If you have recently paid membership, please ignore this request. If you - for whatever reason - generally pay membership at another time of the year, you may continue to do so.
  • If you are having financial difficulty meeting the membership dues obligations, please contact our Rabbi or Treasurer to discuss alternate financial arrangements. All conversations will be kept confidential.

Membership to our synagogue comes with no privileges, but your support is essential to our important work. Thank you - once again - for being a part of our great renewal.

Elie Yudewitz, President
Tali Zilberman Neuhaus, Secretary
Alan Schwartz, Treasurer
Gavriel Bellino, Rabbi

After a year like no other, your partnership in our rebuilding and revitalization is more important than ever.

There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.

This Shabbat we are once again in our beloved sanctuary for Saturday morning services. We feel that is appropriate in light of the improving conditions and metrics we follow. The Six Feet Synagogue service will run a bit quicker than usual, with reduced singing, and Anti-Social Kiddush Club  (Kiddush-To-Go). We ask that you come on time, so that we may conclude early. In addition, the sanctuary may be quite cold as we plan to have windows and doors open to increase ventilation in the building. Please click here for our updated set of Practices & Community Expectations.

Kiddush-to-Go has been sponsored by Brenda Pace in memory of her mother, Ruth Spitzer Kaye.

Passover Preparation

Sell Your Hametz: Rabbi Bellino has created a DIGITAL FORM which will work as your authorization for the sale of your Hametz. The form asks you to specify where the Hametz is located, estimate its value, and agree to authorize him to sell it on your behalf. There are six sections and you will need to scroll a bit. It should not take longer than three minutes to complete. Rabbi Bellino (or a designated representative) will sell your Hametz on Thursday evening, March 25th. When he has received your authorization, you will receive a confirmation.

Passover Charity: Although there is a widespread custom to pay the rabbi who facilitated the sale of Hametz, we urge you to not do so. Instead, please feel free (but not obligated) to contribute to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund. Be sure to specify that this is for Passover Charity. You may pledge an amount on the form and/or pay on the website or simply Venmo the synagogue @sixthstreetsynagogue.

Passover Kashering: Click Click here for Kashering Guidelines to facilitate your observance and increase the ease of your preparation. Many of these laws are simply “standard procedure,” but in light of the uncertainties and risks we are currently experiencing, several of the recommendations presented here are the appropriate application of various leniencies, and thus depart from common practice.

Next Shabbat: Next Shabbat is also Erev Pesach. Shabbat morning services will be held at 8:00 AM, a full hour earlier. There will be Challah rolls (and beer) at Kiddush, to be finished before 10:56 AM. For Rabbi Belino's guide of how to maneuver this relatively rare event click here.

Purim

Purim begins next Thursday night. In light of the global pandemic, this year's observance is going to be a different sort of complicated than that in years past. We believe that the preservation of health is *the* Halakhic priority and we have acted boldly and diligently to reduce the risk of exposure. Our decisions and procedures are made in collaboration with our medical committee that reviews local positivity rates, city-wide hospitalization rates, and the latest CDC guidelines.

These are exceptional times and so exceptions can and should be made. We will - of course - read the Megillah in synagogue, but we will simultaneously broadcast it over Zoom. We side with the Torah authorities who believe that the performance of this Mitzvah over Zoom is perfectly acceptable.

We also understand the emotional and spiritual interest in hearing the Megillah in person. To this end, we plan to re-open the synagogue for both evening and morning Megillah readings. Attendance will be limited and registration will be mandatory. The frequency and operations of the readings will depend on local positivity rates, as well as community interest. Details will be sent upon registration. You may register here.

Matanot L'Evyonim (gifts to the poor) is arguably the most important mitzvah of Purim. In the course of our own joy, we make it our duty to share with others, thus amplifying the spirit of unity that we read about in the Megillah, and extending the divine generosity shown to our people. In the spirit of modern Religious Humanism, we extend this kindness to both our Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors.

This Purim we will again partner with Rabbi Zvi Romm of the Bialystoker Synagogue, Rabbi Joe Wolfson of JLIC-NYU and the NYU community, the Bowery Mission, the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network, and Knock Knock Give a Sock, in providing gifts to those in our neighborhood who truly need our assistance

To make a donation click here. You may also Venmo us @sixthstreetsynagogue (be sure to specify Purim Charity!). Of course you may also bring in a check (made out to Sixth Street Community Synagogue Rabbi's Discretionary) or cash before or on Purim.

Memorial in Tribute to Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter

02/16/2021 08:49:09 AM

Feb16

Join us as we convene to offer words of tribute and reflect upon the passing, contribution, and legacy of Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter ז"ל, longtime rabbi of the Young Israel of Fifth Avenue / Sixteenth Street Synagogue.

This event will take place this Sunday (2/21) at 3 PM EST on Zoom and will feature several students, friends, and family members.

Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter served as the Rabbi of the former Young Israel of Fifth Avenue / Sixteenth Street Synagogue for 45 years. Under his guidance, the synagogue became a vital center of downtown Jewish life. He was a graduate of Yeshiva University, a student of the late Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, and a retired professor of Talmud and Jewish philosophy at Yeshiva University.

Our synagogue is closed this Shabbat. For the last year, our closure, reopening, and operating decisions have all been made under the guidance of our medical committee - a group of medical professionals, scientists, and policy experts.

The current closure is largely based upon the local 7-day positivity averages of each of the areas in which our local membership lives. The current elevated Covid positivity of our zip code (10003 - 1.89%), Stuyvesant Town (10009 - 4.22%) and the Lower East Side (10002 - 6.64%) concerns us, as does the reality that rates of positivity and hospitalization are high in most neighborhoods of NYC.

Together, we monitor a variety of metrics and discuss the conditions multiple times each week. It continues to be our assessment that the socially-distant and masked services (A.K.A. The Six Feet Synagogue) operating model is appropriate only when local positivity rates and other metrics are low.

Most obviously, we share your disappointment, but we believe that this is an appropriately cautious measure, one that demonstrates our understanding of the realities that we continue to face, as well as our continuous commitment to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond.

Finally, we are grateful to our team of professionals who continue to advise us and keep us safe. We pray for and look forward to the eventual end of this plague, or at the very least, relatively safer local conditions that would allow us to re-open.

We ask that you not overwhelm other synagogues in our neighborhood and that you continue your rigorous social distancing practices.

News

We are planning a memorial event to reflect upon the legacy and impact of Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter, former rav of the Sixteenth Street Synagogue. The event will be held on Zoom on Sunday, February 21st at 3:00 PM.

Purim begins on February 25th. This year, Purim is a different sort of complicated. The schedule (meaning frequency) of in-person Megillah readings, will be determined by occupancy capacity, a variable dependent upon interest and the positivity rates the week prior. Attendance will require pre-registration. Please let us know if you plan to attend. That said, we side with our leaders who permit Megillah reading over Zoom during this exceptional time and of course will offer that option as well.
