Our synagogue is closed this Shabbat. For the last year, our closure, reopening, and operating decisions have all been made under the guidance of our medical committee - a group of medical professionals, scientists, and policy experts.

The current closure is largely based upon the local 7-day positivity averages of each of the areas in which our local membership lives. The current elevated Covid positivity of our zip code (10003 - 1.89%), Stuyvesant Town (10009 - 4.22%) and the Lower East Side (10002 - 6.64%) concerns us, as does the reality that rates of positivity and hospitalization are high in most neighborhoods of NYC.

Together, we monitor a variety of metrics and discuss the conditions multiple times each week. It continues to be our assessment that the socially-distant and masked services (A.K.A. The Six Feet Synagogue) operating model is appropriate only when local positivity rates and other metrics are low.

Most obviously, we share your disappointment, but we believe that this is an appropriately cautious measure, one that demonstrates our understanding of the realities that we continue to face, as well as our continuous commitment to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond.

Finally, we are grateful to our team of professionals who continue to advise us and keep us safe. We pray for and look forward to the eventual end of this plague, or at the very least, relatively safer local conditions that would allow us to re-open.

We ask that you not overwhelm other synagogues in our neighborhood and that you continue your rigorous social distancing practices.

News

We are planning a memorial event to reflect upon the legacy and impact of Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter, former rav of the Sixteenth Street Synagogue. The event will be held on Zoom on Sunday, February 21st at 3:00 PM.

Purim begins on February 25th. This year, Purim is a different sort of complicated. The schedule (meaning frequency) of in-person Megillah readings, will be determined by occupancy capacity, a variable dependent upon interest and the positivity rates the week prior. Attendance will require pre-registration. Please let us know if you plan to attend. That said, we side with our leaders who permit Megillah reading over Zoom during this exceptional time and of course will offer that option as well.

Rabbi Bellino is currently teaching a series entitled "Drunk Rabbis." The class discusses an array of Early Rabbinic teachings regarding the perceived sophistication as well as the dangers of drinking alcohol. Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM.

In the market for a Mitzva? 700 free kosher meals are distributed on the Lower East Side daily, and volunteers are needed! If you can help, please contact Penina Seidman.

Catering: Village Crown Catering is now offering Shabbat food delivery to our neighborhood. For more information or to place an order, please contact them at info@villagecrown.com or click to their website. You must order by Tuesday evening (5:00 PM).

Our synagogue has been closed for the last 8 weeks and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Since March, our closure, reopening, and operating decisions have all been made under the guidance of our medical committee - a group of medical professionals, scientists, and policy experts.

The current closure is largely based upon the local 7-day positivity averages of each of the areas in which our local membership lives. The current elevated Covid positivity of our zip code (10003 - 3.13%), Stuyvesant Town (10009 - 4.69%) and the Lower East Side (10002 - 7.92%) concerns us, as does the reality that rates of positivity and hospitalization are increasing in all neighborhoods of NYC. Our synagogue has been closed for the last 7 weeks and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Since March, our closure, reopening, and operating decisions have all been made under the guidance of our medical committee - a group of medical professionals, scientists, and policy experts.

The current closure is largely based upon the local 7-day positivity averages of each of the areas in which our local membership lives. The current elevated Covid positivity of our zip code (10003 - 2.7%), Stuyvesant Town (10009 - 5.3%) and the Lower East Side (10002 - 7.6%) concerns us, as does the reality that rates of positivity and hospitalization are increasing in all neighborhoods of NYC. In addition, the citywide rate is excessively high - being above 5% for the last month.

Prayer for our Country

01/07/2021 12:16:40 PM

Jan7

Greetings Friends,

The Babylonian Talmud (Sota 11a) provides a fascinating backstory, relevant to the upcoming Torah Portion and unfortunately to our times.

Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba says that Rabbi Simai says: Three were consulted by Pharaoh [and they were:] Balaam, and Job, and Jethro. Balaam, who advised, [was punished by] being killed. Job, who was silent, was punished with afflictions. Jethro, who fled, merited that some of his descendants sat in the Chamber of Hewn Stone (i.e., the Sanhedrin).

This homiletic tradition speaks of the moral failure, not only of perpetuating evil, but remaining silent in the face of it, or at the very least, declining to distance oneself from it. (Of course, similar sentiments have been attributed to Habakuk, Edmund Burke, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Ginetta Sagan and many others.) This teaching acknowledges that speaking out can simultaneously lead to personal, social and political exile; nevertheless, it suggests that the foundations of Judaic morality and justice are rooted in one person’s appropriate objection.

It is with this Midrash in mind, that I unequivocally express my complete disgust and dismay having witnessed the atrocities that unfolded yesterday at the Capitol (and beyond). The disregard for law and decency on the part of the terrorists, undermined the foundations of our democratic tradition. It is terrifying that our President has participated in fueling the fire that facilitated this disaster.

I ask that you all petition God to restore peace across our country and to facilitate the reemergence of a republic united that may once again model democracy and civility.

Heavenly Father.
Assist and bless our country,
the United States of America.
Implant love and fraternity
among all who dwell therein.
Bless all the officers of our states
and set in their hearts the spirit of wisdom
and understanding to uphold peace and liberty.

Sincerely,

Gavriel Z. Bellino, Rabbi

12/04/2020 08:38:38 AM

Weekly Update: Shabbat Vayishlach 5781

Candle Lighting Before: 4:10 PM
Shema After: 5:13 PM
Morning Shma Before: 9:25 AM
Morning Amida Before: 10:12 AM
Mincha After: 12:16 PM
Sunset: 4:28 PM
Havdala: 5:13 PM

While we continue to safely operate our modified and socially distant services, we must acknowledge the recent increased positivity rates, locally and abroad. It is for this reason that we have decided to voluntarily close our building THIS Shabbat (12/5), so that we may create some protective distance and reevaluate our operating policies and plans for services.

We believe that this is an appropriately cautious measure, one that demonstrates our acknowledgment of the realities that we continue to face, and our continuous commitment to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond.

We ask that you not overwhelm other synagogues in our neighborhood and that you continue to maintain rigorous social distancing practices.

News

We are devastated by the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, מורנו הרב יעקב צבי בן דוד אריה, ז"ל. Through his numerous articles, countless speeches, and over 30 important volumes, Rabbi Sacks made his Torah accessible to a broad audience, added significantly to Judaic scholarship, and eloquently servDavid Ded as an ambassador of our Tradition. We were fortunate to have him downtown for so long. In addition to his global impact, he was a treasure of our community, a supportive friend of our synagogue, and a personal advisor to several of us. His passing is especially devastating during these divided and scary times, when inspirational leadership is so deeply lacking. We offer condolences to Lady Elaine, to their children and grandchildren.

  • Despite the universal tradition of studying the Rabbinic canon, it seems most appropriate to encourage the study of Rabbi Sacks' Torah. You may find a list of his books here. (Almost all of them are sold on Amazon. Many are available for Kindle.) Please notify us with the name of the volume that you plan to read. It would be nice to make a Siyum in the coming weeks.

  • To preserve his spiritual presence and to further encourage the study of his Torah, we would like our Synagogue library to own a copy of each one of his books and siddurim. Please donate $36 here or Venmo @sixthstreetsynagogue. Be sure to use the charge type 'Library' and to indicate that your donation is intended for the Sacks library. The response to this has been strong and we only a few more volumes donated.

We are saddened by the passing of Rabbi Dovid Feinstein.Rabbi Feinstein served as the head of the Mesivtha Tiferes Yerushalayim on the Lower East Side from the time of his father’s death in 1986 until his own passing last Friday. He served on the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, the rabbinical council connected to Agudath Israel, an umbrella organization representing haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, communities. He was the Rabbinic advisor and guide to the entire ArtScroll enterprise.  Rav Dovid's influence and reach has had an impact on all of us, indirectly if not directly. You may find some personal reflection of our teacher, Dr. Jonathan Boyarin, here.

Downtown Eruv: The downtown community's yearly financial Eruv obligation is roughly $36K. Our synagogue raises at least $6k. (We are half way there!). To make a payment, please do so on our synagogue page, Venmo @sixthstreetsynagogue, or send a check to: The Sixth Street Community Synagogue, 325 East Sixth Street, New York NY 10003. Be sure to specify that this donation is for the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund and/or for the Eruv.

To give you some context: If 200 families/individuals were to give $180, this year's fundraising effort would be over.

Weekly Update: Shabbat Noach 5781

Weekly Update: Shabbat Noach 5781

Candle Lighting Before: 5:45 PM
Shema After: 6:43 PM
Shacharit: 9:00 AM
Mincha After: 1:09 PM
Sunset: 6:01 PM
Havdala: 6:43 PM

Being separated from our building - and from one another - has been painful, but we are confident that in doing so, we successfully protected our community and demonstrated that we value life above all.

This Shabbat we will again hold a 9:00 AM Minyan, with masks required and social-distance preserved. Attendance is monitored and limited, and congregants are seated throughout the entire main sanctuary in individually marked seats. The social hall is closed. Services are shortened and Kiddush offered to-go. Hand sanitizer is available. Please review our social distancing protocols and expectations here.

A Kiddush-To-Go has been sponsored by:

  • Phoebe & Richard McBee in honor of their daughter, Julia McBee
  • The Bellino Family in celebration of the birthday of Keshet Bellino

For class schedule and Zoom links, click here.

Tanakh Yomi 5781: As we have just begun a new cycle of Torah reading and study, please consider joining our synagogue in Tanakh Yomi, our (near) daily study of Bible that facilitates its completion in one year.

Here's how it works:

  • Follow the Torah reading every Shabbat.
  • Read approximately 3 chapters of Prophets/Writings Sunday thru Friday.
  • Follow the Megillot on the days we read them.

To keep everyone on the same page, there's a schedule, which includes the daily readings as well as several days after each book for rest and "catch-up."

Please plan for your completion of Tanakh on Shabbat Nitzavim, September 4th, 2021.

Shabbat Bereishit Closure

With the holiday season now behind us, we would like to thank you all for your continued support. These Yamim Tovim were particularly festive and lovely, despite the significant modifications that were necessary. We are most grateful to all those of you who participated in our services, who enhanced our community with their presence, and who sustained us with their great generosity. Most importantly, we thank all those of you who have partnered with us in our efforts to vigilantly protect our community during this particularly difficult time.

While we continue to safely operate our modified and socially distant services, we must continue to acknowledge that the risks and harms of the pandemic are still present. For this reason, we have decided to voluntarily close our building this Shabbat (10/17), so that we may create some protective distance. We believe that this is an appropriately cautious measure, especially given our increased interaction over the holidays, and the probable recent increase in travel to neighborhoods with higher levels of Covid positivity. At the very least, we hope that this decision demonstrates our acknowledgment of the realities that we continue to face, and our recommitment to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond. We ask that you not overwhelm other synagogues in our neighborhood and that you maintain your rigorous social distancing practices. We look forward to greeting you on Shabbat Noach (10/24).

The traditional post-holiday greeting, is "gut vinter." May our rigorous concern for the preservation of health, paired with God's continued protection, facilitate for us a healthy and happy winter.

Hoshana Rabba/Shemini Atzeret/
Simchat Torah

Hoshana Rabba Shacharit will be held this Friday morning at 8:00 AM in the Main Sanctuary. Hoshanot bundles will be made available. Hoshana Rabba on Sixth Street is surprisingly efficient and always beautiful. Please consider joining us.

Sadly, the final days of the holiday will look very different this year. Our absolute insistence upon social distancing - especially indoors - precludes us from observing many of the Simchat Torah practices that we are used to. The recent Covid uptick has only strengthened our resolve to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond.

Please be aware of the following holiday modifications:

  • No evening services will be held.
  • Morning services will meet at 9:00 AM on both days. They will run quicker than usual. Yizkor on Shemini Atzeret will be recited at approximately 10:15 AM.
  • The scroll of Ecclesiastes will not be read.
  • Daytime Hakkafot will be performed by one person. The rest of us will observe/participate from our seats.
  • No extra Aliyot will be given.
  • Simchat Torah honors will be given to those who have prepared the readings.
  • Choni and his father will perform every Hagba/Gelila, unless another father/son duo is available.
  • A modest To-Go Kiddush will be made available outside.

As always: Anyone who is feeling unwell or is immunocompromised is religiously prohibited from participating in public prayer services. Anyone who is even nervous about exposure is released from the general obligation of public prayer.

Sunset: 6:35 PM
Sukka after: 7:15 PM

First Day - Shabbat, October 3

Second Day - Sunday, October 4

Shacharit: 9:00 AM

Sukkot

Although Covid-positivity rates have increased among certain segments of the Orthodox community, assuming the local rates stay where they are, we are comfortable holding services over Sukkot. This will include morning (only) services as well as Sukka access. With so many of us away this Yom Tov, we ask that you please come on time.

Immediately following services there will be a Sukka Kiddush sponsored by Stanley Sherman in memory of his great grandfather, Samuel Levi. Wine, Challa rolls, and snacks will be made available so that everyone can conveniently perform the mitzva.

The Sukkot will be available from 7-10 PM each evening of Yom Tov as well as immediately following services.

In order to help effectively socially-distance, a third Sukka has been built on the sanctuary terrace found on the eastern side of our building. We will have to be very careful and conscious of the space, maintaining distance, limiting exposure time, and taking turns. To be clear: Anyone who is feeling unwell, is immunocompromised, or is even nervous about exposure is released from the obligation of Sukka and may eat Yom Tov meals indoors.

News

We wish a Mazal Tov to Chavie Lieber & Yoni Stokar upon the birth of a boy.

Next Friday is Hoshana Rabba. We expect to convene an 8:00 AM Shacharit in the main sanctuary.

A plan for a modified Simchat Torah is in the works. Stay tuned.

Post YK Gratitude/Kol Nidrei Appeal. Yom Kippur was a wonderful success. More than 200 people - masked, distanced, and in limited groups - were welcomed over the course of the day. Each service was magnificent;  "normal," uplifting, and safe. We are especially grateful to our cantors, Meir Shapiro and Neil Kitainik for their beautiful and perfectly-timed davening. We also thank Jonathan Falik for his Torah reading, Lübba Wintzer and Choni Bellino for their help in setting up the sanctuary, Elie Yudewitz for his ushering, Daniela Sirotti and Gloria Mills for sponsoring the Break Fast, and Vincenzo Aiosa and staff for their hard work in preparing, disinfecting, and maintaining our building.

At Kol Nidrei - the service that surprisingly encourages us to pivot away from our more predictable behaviors - Rabbi Bellino discussed how tradition is sometimes counter-intuitively secured - and even enhanced - by flexibility and a creative spirit, and how this has long-defined his religious approach and vision of our synagogue's role within Orthodox Jewish life. He applied this outlook to our safety as well, and detailed our ongoing challenges during - and successes despite - the global pandemic. If this vision speaks to you, if you have benefited from it, or if you would like to see it enlarged further, please consider participating in our Kol Nidrei Campaign. Your support is essential for our continued success. We remind you that any amount helps our efforts and lifts our spirits.

I also thank Jonathan Falik for his Torah reading, Lübba Wintzer and Choni Bellino for their help in setting up the sanctuary, Elie Yudewitz for his ushering, Daniela Sirotti and Gloria Mills for sponsoring the Break Fast, and Vincenzo Aiosa and staff for their hard work in preparing, disinfecting, and maintaining our building.

At Kol Nidrei - the service that surprisingly encourages us to pivot away from our more predictable behaviors - I discussed how tradition is sometimes counter-intuitively secured - and even enhanced - by flexibility and a creative spirit, and how this has long-defined my religious approach and my vision of our synagogue's role within Orthodox Jewish life. I applied this outlook to our safety as well, and detailed our ongoing challenges during - and successes despite - the global pandemic. If this vision speaks to you, if you have benefited from it, or if you would like to see it enlarged further, please consider participating in our Kol Nidrei Campaign. Your support is essential for our continued success. I remind you that any amount helps my efforts and lifts my spirits.

Sukkot. I am aware of the increase in Covid-positivity among certain segments of the Orthodox community, but assuming the local rates stay where they are, I am comfortable holding services over Sukkot. This will include evening evening services, morning services, as well as Sukka access. In order to help effectively socially-distance I have had a third Sukka built on the sanctuary terrace found on the eastern side of our building. We will have to be very careful and conscious of the space, maintaining distance, limiting exposure time, and and take turns. Wine and Challa rolls will be made available so that everyone can conveniently perform the mitzva. To be clear: Anyone who is feeling unwell, is immunocompromised, or is even nervous about exposure is released from the obligation of Sukka and may eat Yom Tov meals indoors. Finally, a plan for a modified Simchat Torah is in the works, but it is unfortunately too soon for me to make a firm commitment.

Thank you for your continued interest, flexibility, and support. Wishing you continued good health and a joyful holiday season,

GZB

Yom Kippur

Assuming that the local infection rates stay low, we will hold modified Yom Kippur services. We are indeed blessed with a large sanctuary; however, we are limited in the number of people that we may safely accommodate. RSVPS are required and shul members have been prioritized. Seats will be assigned and masks will be required.

You will not be allowed to enter unless you have a confirmed reservation. If you are unsure of the status of your reservation, contact us immediately.

There are two options for Kol Nidrei:

  • Early Kol Nidrei will begin at 4:00 PM with Mincha and will include the Kol Nidrei service, a short speech, and one of the Yom Kippur evening poems. The service will conclude at 5:00 PM after which you should go home and eat your pre-Yom-Kippur meal. You should be careful to conclude the meal and light candles by 6:25 PM.
  • Zman (on-time) Kol Nidrei will begin at 6:20 PM and will be live-streamed (until 6:42 PM). A short speech will be followed by a shortened Yom Kippur Maariv. Note that at at this point, you are not permitted to attend both this Kol Nidrei and Neilah. You will have to choose one.

There are two options for the morning service.

  • The full morning service will begin at 8:00 AM. It will include a mostly rabbinic Shacharit but will include the penitential prayers. There will be a Torah reading, Yizkor, as well as an abridged Musaph.
  • The late half-service will begin with Yizkor at 1:00 PM. Yizkor will be followed by an abridged Musaph.

Finally, there will be one service on Yom Kippur afternoon.

  • It will begin with Mincha at 4:45 PM and then Neila at 6:00 PM. There will be only one Neila service, and we are limiting Neila attendance to our membership. Remember that you must choose between the Zman Kol Nidrei (at 6:20 PM) and the Neila service.

We thank you for you patience and for partnering with us in making our High Holy Day services sufficiently safe and appropriately meaningful. If you have any questions or suggestions, be sure to contact us.

Kol Nidrei

09/24/2020 03:37:10 PM

Sep24

Greetings friends,

This has been a year like no other. For six months we experienced festive social events, thoughtful in-person study, and beautiful services; and then we learned to temporarily live without these blessings and we adjusted our model so that we would continue to shine despite our new reality.

We are still very much a center of thoughtful and fun Modern Orthodox Judaism. We continue to thrive online and at our carefully social-distanced services (Six-Feet Synagogue). Unfortunately, our operating expenses are not all that different, and so we ask you now for some support.

https://www.sixthstreetsynagogue.org/kol-nidrei-appeal.html

Our Kol Nidrei campaign is underway. Please consider partnering with us so that we may continue serving the Downtown community, operating in our unique way, continuously providing and redefining thoughtful and kind Jewish experience.

We are grateful to you for your support,

Alan Schwartz, Treasurer
Gavriel Bellino, Rabbi

High Holy Days

This Saturday Night (September 12th), we will hold our First Night of Selichot service at 10:30 PM. Attendance will be limited (you must RSVP), but will be broadcast on Facebook and Instagram. The service will be led by Meir Shapiro. For a PDF of the service, click here.

Assuming that the local infection rates stay low, we will convene High Holy Day services. We are blessed with a large sanctuary; however, we are limited in the number of people that we can safely accommodate. Additionally, we plan to shorten the service, thereby limiting any exposure. Seats will be assigned, tickets will be distributed, and masks will be required.

  • The Later Service will begin at 11:30 AM with a short sermon on the first day, and Shofar on the second. Musaph will conclude by approximately 1:00 PM.

Pick one option! We will need to know the number of men and women in your party, as well as whether these men and women are social-distancing from one another. You cannot pick one option for one day and the other for the second day. Please RSVP ASAP.

On Sunday, September 20th, there will be additional Shofar services that will be held outside. At 2:00 PM there will be Shofar on the synagogue steps and at 3:00 PM there will be Shofar in Washington Square Park (close to the arch).

Although the Yom Kippur schedule has not yet been formalized, you can expect a similar procedure (Just swipe out Shofar Service with Yizkor!). You will most likely be asked to choose between Kol Nidrei and Neila as well. Stay tuned!

This Just In!

  • We wish a Mazal Tov to Brian Yagoda & Tamar Essner upon their recent engagement.

  • Kiddush-To-Go has been sponsored by Dr. Ashira Lubkin & Alan Feder in hope that 5781 will be better (healthier) than 5780.

Weekly Update: Shabbat Ki Tavo 5780

Candle Lighting Before: 7:04 PM
Shema After: 8:02 PM
Shacharit: 9:00 AM
Mincha After: 1:26 PM
Sunset: 7:20 PM
Havdala: 8:02 PM

Being separated from our building - and from one another - has been painful, but we are confident that in doing so, we successfully protected our community and demonstrated that we value life above all.

This Shabbat we will again hold a 9:00 AM Minyan, with masks required and social-distance preserved. Attendance is monitored and limited, and congregants are seated throughout the entire main sanctuary in individually marked seats. The social hall is closed. Services are shortened and Kiddush offered to-go. Hand sanitizer is available. Please review our social distancing protocols and expectations here.

Kiddush-To-Go hasn't been sponsored yet. You should probably get on that.

Please consider joining our Pre-Shabbat Lechaim at 6:00 PM on Friday. Click here.

High Holy Days

Assuming that the local infection rates stay low, we will convene High Holy Day services. We are blessed with a large sanctuary; however, we are limited in the number of people that we can safely accommodate. Additionally, we plan to shorten the service, thereby limiting any exposure. Seats will be assigned, tickets will be distributed, and masks will be required.

For Rosh HaShana there will be two separate services, each day. The earlier service will be a complete (albeit shortened) service. The later service will consist of Shofar (on the second day) and Musaph exclusively. Services will be lead by Meir Shapiro and Neil Kitainik. They will be taking turns.

  • The Early Service will begin at 7:30 AM with Pesukei d'Zimra. HaMelekh at 8:00 AM. A piyut-free Shacharit will be followed by Torah Reading. At 9:00 AM there will be a short sermon on the first day, and the Shofar service on the second. Musaph will conclude by approximately 10:30 AM.
  • Following the Early Service we will wipe down the pews and machzorim (We might ask for your help).

Although the Yom Kippur schedule has not yet been formalized, you can expect a similar procedure (Just swipe out Shofar Service with Yizkor!). You will most likely be asked to choose between Kol Nidrei and Neila as well. Stay tuned!

News

The 2020 Census needs your help! The Manhattan self-response rates for Census 2020 are considerably lower than 2010, most likely due to the pandemic and people leaving the city. Quite simply, each completed census brings money to their neighborhoods, ensures representation in Washington and can be filled out online in less than ten minutes at www.my2020census.gov. You do not need a paper form or code to fill out the census, you can simply go to my2020census.gov and write-in your NYC address.

Bagel Boss on 1st Avenue and 15th Street is open for take-out and delivery. You can place an order here. Additionally, they are working with "Manhattan Together" to help feed hungry New Yorkers. To support their efforts or to learn more, click on the "Manhattan Together" GoFundMe page.
