Our synagogue has been closed for the last 11 weeks and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Since March, our closure, reopening, and operating decisions have all been made under the guidance of our medical committee - a group of medical professionals, scientists, and policy experts.

The current closure is largely based upon the local 7-day positivity averages of each of the areas in which our local membership lives. The current elevated Covid positivity of our zip code (10003 - 2.07%), Stuyvesant Town (10009 - 4.58%) and the Lower East Side (10002 - 4.96%) concerns us, as does the reality that rates of positivity and hospitalization are high in most neighborhoods of NYC.

Together, we monitor a variety of metrics and discuss the conditions multiple times each week. It continues to be our assessment that the socially-distant and masked services (A.K.A. The Six Feet Synagogue) operating model is appropriate only when local positivity rates and other metrics are low.

Most obviously, we share your disappointment, but we believe that this is an appropriately cautious measure, one that demonstrates our understanding of the realities that we continue to face, as well as our continuous commitment to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond.

Finally, we are grateful to our team of professionals who continue to advise us and keep us safe. We pray for and look forward to the eventual end of this plague, or at the very least, relatively safer local conditions that would allow us to re-open.

This Shabbat is Shabbat Mevarkhim. Rosh Chodesh Adar will be next Friday and Shabbat.

We are planning a memorial event to reflect upon the legacy and impact of Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter, former rav of the Sixteenth Street Synagogue. The event will be held on Zoom on Sunday, February 21st.

Purim begins on February 25th. This year, Purim is a different sort of complicated. The schedule (meaning frequency) of in-person Megillah readings, will be determined by occupancy capacity, a variable dependent upon interest and the positivity rates the week prior. Attendance will require pre-registration. Please let us know if you plan to attend. That said, we side with our leaders who permit Megillah reading over Zoom during this exceptional time and of course will offer that option as well.

Rabbi Bellino is currenty teaching a series entitled "Drunk Rabbis." The class discusses an array of Early Rabbinic teachings regarding the perceived sophistication as well as the dangers of drinking alcohol. Tuesdays, 7:00-8:00 PM.

We are saddened by the passing of Rabbi Israel Wohlgelernter (מורנו הרב ישראל אלעזר בן הרב יעקב יצחק), longtime rabbi of the Young Israel of Fifth Avenue / Sixteenth Street Synagogue. We offer blessings of consolation to the Wohlgelernter, Gordon, Katz, Roness, and Fruchter families as well to his many many students.

While we continue to safely operate our modified and socially distant services, we must acknowledge the recent increased positivity rates, locally and abroad. It is for this reason that we have decided to voluntarily close our building THIS Shabbat (11/28), so that we may create some protective distance and reevaluate our operating policies and plans for services.

Being separated from our building - and from one another - has been painful, but we are confident that in doing so, we successfully protected our community and demonstrated that we value life above all. 

This Shabbat we will again hold a 9:00 AM Minyan, with masks required and social-distance preserved. Attendance is monitored and limited, and congregants are seated throughout the entire main sanctuary in individually marked seats. The social hall is closed. Services are shortened and Kiddush offered to-go. Hand sanitizer is available. Please review our social distancing protocols and expectations here.

We are devastated by the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, מורנו הרב יעקב צבי בן דוד אריה, ז"ל. Through his numerous articles, countless speeches, and over 30 important volumes, Rabbi Sacks made his Torah accessible to a broad audience, added significantly to Judaic scholarship, and eloquently servDavid Ded as an ambassador of our Tradition. We were fortunate to have him downtown for so long. In addition to his global impact, he was a treasure of our community, a supportive friend of our synagogue, and a personal advisor to several of us. His passing is especially devastating during these divided and scary times, when inspirational leadership is so deeply lacking. We offer condolences to Lady Elaine, to their children and grandchildren.

• Despite the universal tradition of studying the Rabbinic canon, it seems most appropriate to encourage the study of Rabbi Sacks' Torah. You may find a list of his books here. (Almost all of them are sold on Amazon. Many are available for Kindle.) Please notify us with the name of the volume that you plan to read. It would be nice to make a Siyum in the coming weeks.
   
• To preserve his spiritual presence and to further encourage the study of his Torah, we would like our Synagogue library to own a copy of each one of his books and siddurim. Please donate $36 here or Venmo @sixthstreetsynagogue. Be sure to use the charge type 'Library' and to indicate that your donation is intended for the Sacks library. The response to this has been strong and we only a few more volumes donated.

We are saddened by the passing of Rabbi Dovid Feinstein.Rabbi Feinstein served as the head of the Mesivtha Tiferes Yerushalayim on the Lower East Side from the time of his father’s death in 1986 until his own passing last Friday. He served on the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah, the rabbinical council connected to Agudath Israel, an umbrella organization representing haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, communities. He was the Rabbinic advisor and guide to the entire ArtScroll enterprise.  Rav Dovid's influence and reach has had an impact on all of us, indirectly if not directly. This is not a burden that should fall solely upon synagogues or institutions, but should be shared by the many individuals and families that make use of the Eruv. How much to give is certainly up to you, and any donation is appreciated. Shabbat Bereishit Closure

With the holiday season now behind us, we would like to thank you all for your continued support. These Yamim Tovim were particularly festive and lovely, despite the significant modifications that were necessary. We are most grateful to all those of you who participated in our services, who enhanced our community with their presence, and who sustained us with their great generosity. Most importantly, we thank all those of you who have partnered with us in our efforts to vigilantly protect our community during this particularly difficult time.

While we continue to safely operate our modified and socially distant services, we must continue to acknowledge that the risks and harms of the pandemic are still present. For this reason, we have decided to voluntarily close our building this Shabbat (10/17), so that we may create some protective distance. We believe that this is an appropriately cautious measure, especially given our increased interaction over the holidays, and the probable recent increase in travel to neighborhoods with higher levels of Covid positivity. At the very least, we hope that this decision demonstrates our acknowledgment of the realities that we continue to face, and our recommitment to act boldly (and creatively) to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond. We ask that you not overwhelm other synagogues in our neighborhood and that you maintain your rigorous social distancing practices. We look forward to greeting you on Shabbat Noach (10/24).

The traditional post-holiday greeting, is "gut vinter." May our rigorous concern for the preservation of health, paired with God's continued protection, facilitate for us a healthy and happy winter.
