Being separated from our building - and from one another - has been painful, but we are confident that in doing so, we successfully protected our community and demonstrated that we value life above all.

This Shabbat we will again hold a 9:00 AM Minyan, with masks required and social-distance preserved. Attendance is monitored and limited, and congregants are seated throughout the entire main sanctuary in individually marked seats. The social hall is closed. Services are shortened and Kiddush offered to-go. Hand sanitizer is available. Please review our social distancing protocols and expectations here.

Kiddush-To-Go (weather permitting) has been sponsored by Jonathan Mühlrad in admiration of Shimmy Rapps, Richard McBee, Jack Lebewohl, Jeremy Newberger, Gershom Silvera, and Lübba Wintzer for their Morning Minyan Motivation.

Please consider joining our Pre-Shabbat Lechaim at 6:00 PM on Friday. Click here.

High Holy Days

With the start of Elul, we begin our preparation for the High Holy Days. This year, it’s complicated. For the last seven weeks, we've held masked, social-distanced, and shortened services in our sanctuary. This has largely been a success, though it continues to depend upon local rates of infection, and our own community’s abiding by our standards to create and maintain a safe environment for us all. If the local infection rates stay low, we will convene High Holy Day services.

We are blessed with a large sanctuary; however, we are limited in the number of people we can safely accommodate. This can be mitigated in several ways (RSVP required, preference for members, multiple services, shofar outdoors, broadcast Kol Nidrei, etc.); however, we cannot reasonably commit to a High Holy Day plan without a better sense of the demand.

For now, we simply ask you - our members and friends: Do you plan to attend our Rosh HaShana and/or Yom Kippur services? How many will be in your party? Do you feel  you can commit to our Community Practices and Expectations? Please let us know your High Holy Day intentions (both affirmative and negative) here. Sooner, rather than later.

You do not need a paper form or code to fill out the census, you can simply go to my2020census.gov and write-in your NYC address.

This Shabbat (Re'eh)

08/14/2020 01:46:12 PM

Aug14

Greetings,

Please consider the following additional announcements:

1. The Eruv is UP, but because of construction, 9th and 10th Avenues between 20th and 22nd Streets are not in the eruv. This will be so until further notice. 8th avenue is within the eruv. Should you find yourself close to this construction area, you had best detour eastward and be sure to look above you.

2. Shabbat Services begin at 9 AM and we aim to conclude before 11 AM. With several of our regulars away, it would be helpful if you were to come as close to 9 as possible.

3. As always, you may review our social distancing protocols and expectations here.

Shabbat Shalom!

Dear Friends,

A new fiscal year began on June 1st, so it is once again time for us to encourage membership, asking you to formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

We acknowledge that this is a strange time to make this request. With our synagogue indefinitely closed, we are forced to appeal to your memory of our important work, our beautiful building, and our thriving community as well as to your optimism for our safe return.

Despite our now ten week hiatus, this has been a year of significant growth, meaningful services, insightful classes, festive parties, engaging children’s programming, and respected and inspiring speakers. We continue to make essential repairs and aesthetic improvements to our 174 year old building. We are most grateful to the many of you who have stepped up to join our leadership, attend our services, contribute financially, and strengthen our community through your presence, establishing our synagogue as a true center of thoughtful Orthodox Judaism.

Membership dues go a long way in making all of this possible. Won’t you please share in our great legacy and help us continue our impressive revitalization? There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.

Membership Level
Family $1000
Individual $550

  • For Membership Renewal, please click here
  • For New Members, please click here

You can also Venmo us @sixthstreetsynagogue, or mail a check to 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003.

  • Should you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments. You can easily arrange this through our website and/or with the help of our office.
  • If you have recently paid membership, please ignore this request. If you - for whatever reason - generally pay membership at another time of the year, you may continue to do so.
  • If you are having financial difficulty meeting the membership dues obligations, please contact our Rabbi or Treasurer to discuss alternate financial arrangements. All conversations will be kept confidential.

Thank you for being a part of our great success,

Elie Yudewitz, President
Tali Zilberman Neuhaus, Secretary

We categorically reject racism and bogtry of any kind. We stand in solidarity with our African-American brothers and sisters in peaceful protest of the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, among the countless similar acts of violence, immeasurable tragedies, and senseless daily injustices that the Black community experiences. We denounce the use of the police force to repress lawful protest and simultaneously condemn those who take advantage of this moment to loot, hurt, and destroy. We acknowledge that systemic racism continues to devalue the lives of people of color and we call for change.

Services and classes at Sixth Street Community Synagogue are still suspended. The building is closed. Thank you for partnering with us as we continue to diligently follow the advice of our medical professionals and the laws of our officials, and as we demonstrate to God that we value life above all.

Dear Friends,

You must now be aware of Governor Cuomo's recent permission to religious institutions to hold services limited to 10 people (albeit masked and distanced), of President Trump's declaration of religious institutions as essential, as well as of the handful of well-intentioned synagogues that are giving this a try.

Despite all of this, our synagogue will continue to remain closed. Here's why:

  1. Our closing was an easy decision, but our re-opening is a much more difficult task; one that will require a patient and thoughtful deliberation involving risk mitigation policies that we are not yet able to offer and/or enforce. It is simply too soon to re-open and we will not be reckless with your safety.
  2. We agree with the RCA and OU recommendations in exercising extreme caution, even more so than the demands of State. We share in Rav Herschel Schachter's insistence that our primary religious duty is to protect life and we are proud to be a link in the chain of a tradition that is cautious, sensible, and mahmir (strict) regarding issues pertaining to pikuah nefesh (the protection of life).
  3. Even if we felt perfectly safe doing so, we would never open for only 10. We believe that a quorum of 10 men constitutes a halachic minyan, but we would never hold a service that definitionally excludes women, potential converts, or children from attending. We are similarly uncomfortable with formal policies that restrict those 65 and older. We will not hold services limited to 10 Jewish men under 65 because we are reasonably modern, passionately welcoming, and confident that our diversity is one of our great strengths.
  4. We are mindful of the great Hillul Hashem that several of our co-religionists have created and we feel the responsibility to compensate for their disregard for public safety and relations. We would never want to be complicit - or even perceived as being complicit - in a second wave of illness, God forbid. We will be more comfortable re-opening when the majority of other synagogues, as well as the church around the corner and the masjid down the street do so as well. We are in communication with them.

The reality is that the major institutional synagogues of the Tri-State area - and beyond - remain completely closed. We believe that our synagogue is extraordinary and that our leadership and community are pioneers in Modern-Orthodoxy, but this time we are going stay conventional.

Thank you for your longing to return, your appreciation, your patience, and your understanding. We will continue to update you.

Gavriel Z. Bellino, Rabbi
Elie Yudewitz, President

Membership Drive 2020

05/22/2020 11:32:56 AM

May22

Dear Friends,

With a new fiscal year beginning on June 1st, it is once again time for us to encourage membership, asking you to formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

Associate  $300
Student $150

Alan Schwartz, Treasurer
Gavriel Bellino, Rabbi

Despite our social distancing efforts, it is our intention to replicate as much of the Sixth Street experience as possible.  It is very important to me that we look after each other and continue to maintain and even build our community, remotely. This means calling each other, reaching out on social media, and making sure that our friends and neighbors are adequately supported. Please email us if you need any contact information or if you can think of anyone that might require attention.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Adina Lichtman & Avi Popack upon their recent engagement.

New Pirkei Avot Class: Rabbi Bellino has started a twice-weekly class on Pirkei Avot, starting at the very beginning and which will discuss Tractate Avot from a more realistic perspective. The class will meet for about an hour on Monday and Thursday nights, starting at 7:00 PM. Of course, all you really need is the text itself, but source sheets (manuscripts, external sources, commentaries, etc.) are available online hereOne final point: If you appreciate Rabbi Bellino's "traditionally untraditional" approach to Judaic Studies (or life in general), this class is very much for you. Zoom links will be sent out before the classes.

The unfolding health crisis has caused many much concern and a sense of confusion, experiences undoubtedly exacerbated by our being separated from each other and our synagogue. We pray for swift resolution and healing.

All services and classes at Sixth Street Community Synagogue are suspended. The building is closed.

Thank you for partnering with us as we diligently follow the advice of our medical professionals and the laws of our officials, as we demonstrate to God that we value life above all.

Despite this social distancing, it is our intention to replicate as much of the Sixth Street experience as possible.  It is very important to me that we look after each other and continue to maintain and even build our community, remotely. This means calling each other, reaching out on social media, and making sure that our friends and neighbors are adequately supported. Please email us if you need any contact information or if you can think of anyone that might require attention.

Please consider joining our Pre-Shabbat Lechaim at 6:00 PM on Friday.

News

Ownership of the Hametz that Rabbi Bellino sold has reverted back to its original owners.

After Passover we are forbidden to eat any Hametz that we know was owned by an observant Jew during Passover as a penalty for not destroying/selling it. This is a Rabbinic decree and therefore if one is unsure of the status of Hametz after Passover, it is permitted without extensive research. Therefore, all stores, groceries, supermarkets, convenience stores, and the like are automatically permitted immediately after the holiday.

Passover

Passover is next week. For more information click the following links:

  • Passover Charity - In keeping with the spirit of empathy that Passover engenders, we prepare for Passover by assisting others in their preparation. Unfortunately, Passover will most likely look different this year. As we "socially distance" we must pay careful attention to simultaneously support those in need, especially within our own community. To donate, please visit the Passover Charity page.

  • Passover Preparation - The preparation page is very much in process, but for now contains links to a list of products that do not require special Passover supervision. There will be several Zoom classes devoted to Passover preparation. As always, we will be sure to apply Halacha authentically, but also with some flexibility in light of our current predicament. Please visit the Passover Preparation page for more information.

  • Sell Your Hametz - Rabbi Bellino is happy to sell your Chametz for you. This year though, he will not be accepting forms in person. Instead, he has created a digital form which will work as your authorization for the sale of your Hametz. Please click here for the form.

We strongly believe that safeguarding health is a Halakhic priority, one that requires us to act boldly to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond. We know that this requirement supersedes any requirement of congregational prayer. For more on social distancing click here. If you are someone who is at greater risk of infection, or has symptoms: ask for help. This includes medical assistance, help with food, or just to speak with someone. For more information and/or resources click here.

2019 Tax Letter: You should have received a tax letter from us listing all of your 2019 tax-deductible contributions to the synagogue. If you have any questions about the statement, or feel that some contributions were not listed, please contact us at 212-473-3665, or email us.

We like to think we're different. Everyone from the traditionally Orthodox to the occasionally observant feels at home here - 365 days a year. We hope you do too.
