News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We offer blessings of consolation to the Bigel Family upon the passing of Madeline's mother, Lenore Kolsky.

We are grateful to Rabbi Andrew Scheer for delivering the sermon during services last Shabbat, and to Rabbi Josh Yuter, who was our guest speaker for Seudah Shelishit.

We thank Caroline Berti and Cori Robinson for making Tuesday night's hat-making class such a fun and enjoyable event.

Our Whiskey Wednesday fundraiser was a great success! We are grateful to our very generous participants: Norma & Victor Bellino, Anya Glikson, Aliyah & Michael Gluckstadt, Kenneth Grumer, Terry & Jack Lebewohl, Francesca Macaluso & Dr. Micah Timen, Alexia & Harris Marks, Rav Judah Mischel (in honor of Choni’s Bar Mitzva), Alan Schwartz, Caroline Tell & Evan Gasman, and Shelly & Elie Yudewitz.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is now being prepared. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Henry Reininger who read last week, and to Elie Yudewitz who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on December 9th (the afternoon reading is Miketz). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to read torah to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is December 16th (Shabbat Chanukah).

Seuda Shelishit, 5:45 PM:
Q & A with Rav Hanan Schlesinger

Rav Hanan Schlesinger

Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox rabbi, teacher, and passionate Zionist settler, who has been profoundly transformed by his friendship with the Palestinians he has met.  His understanding of the reality of the Middle East conflict, and of Zionism, has been utterly complicated by the parallel universe to which they have introduced him.

Originally from New York, Rav Hanan made aliya at the age of 20 and has lived over the green line, in Alon Shvut, Gush Etzion, for over 30 years. He spent over 10 years learning in Israeli Talmudic seminaries and also studied towards a MA in Jewish Philosophy at Hebrew University. His professional career has been dedicated to teaching Jewish studies in various colleges and seminaries in the Jerusalem area, as well as in different frameworks in Florida and Texas.

It was in Dallas about 9 years ago that he became involved in interfaith work, first with Christians, and then with Muslims. There he founded Faiths in Conversation, a framework for Jewish - Christian – Muslim theological dialogue. The mind-expanding experience of these trialogues inspired him to attempt to meet Muslims and Christians back in the Holy Land.

Although always drawn to pluralism and deeply empathic for the other, Rav Hanan had never formed a personal relationship with a Palestinian until he returned to Gush Etzion about three and a half years ago. The meetings that began then have become far more meaningful than he could have imagined. He found himself part of the small team that founded Roots/Shorashim/Judur and has dedicated himself to bringing reconciliation to that tiny sliver of land that both Palestinians and Israelis call home.

Hassidic Texts of Passionate Jewish Pluralism

Help us hire the perfect youth leader to run a Bi-weekly (every other) Shabbat morning program for children ages 2-5. This is a paid position; experience with children/education is a plus. This is a unique leadership opportunity to create, develop, and maintain a children's program through working with community leadership. Please email us any recommendations.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending, especially while many of us congregants are away for the summer..

TThe next available Kiddush for sponsorship is September 9th (Ki Tavo).

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Rabbi Andrew Scheer on his Aufruf, which he is celebrating in our synagogue this Shabbat, and on his upcoming wedding to Tali Zipper.

Rosh Hashana is only four weeks away, and so we ask that you renew your commitment to our synagogue in the form of Membership. Family membership includes two free seats. Individual membership includes one free seat. Additional seats for members are $125 and all seats for non-members are $250.

We are grateful to the many of you who have already paid their membership dues. To make a payment, please go to the donation page on our website, or send a check to the synagogue office. To discuss membership or any special seating needs that you may have, please call the office (212-473-3665) or e-mail us at info@sixthstreetsynagogue.org. We plan to provide childcare, so please indicate how many children and on which days they will be joining us.

There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.
