IN TWO WEEKS! Meet Your Neighbors Dinner

02/16/2018 09:45:10 AM

Feb16

In two weeks, on Shabbat Ki Tissa, Friday March 2nd, we will host a Meet Your Neighbors Shabbat Dinner which will bring together our Jewish community with people who are experiencing homelessness. Through dinner, song, and conversation, we will enjoy the unique opportunity to meet our neighbors!

Meet Your Neighbors dinners are a facet of the unique vision of our friend Adina Licthman, founder of Knock Knock Give a Sock, an organization dedicated to collecting socks for those in need and committed to ending the stigma surrounding homelessness.

This dinner will be held in memory of Henry Zilberman ז"ל, beloved father of Tali Zilberman. Henry tried to get to know and welcome each and every person, regardless of their circumstances; and so, this is a fitting tribute.

Registration includes dinner for you and for a neighbor from a local shelter.

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We offer condolences to the Parkland, FL community and we pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazel Tov to Kristina & Daniel Gerschel on the birth and naming of their daughter, Annabelle Talulah Rose (ענהאל טליה) Gerschel.

Last week's Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton was wonderful and fascinating. We are especially grateful to Dr. Marc Shapiro for sharing his scholarship with us, to our generous dinner & Shabbaton sponsors, and to the many of you who attended this important event.

We are grateful to Andy Gelfand & Dr. Ira Orgel, for sponsoring last weeks special Kids Buffet Kiddush in honor of all the children of the Sixth Street Community Synagogue.

2017 Tax Letter: You should have received a tax letter from us last week listing all of your 2017 tax-deductible contributions to the synagogue. If you have any questions, or feel that some contributions were not listed, please contact us at 212-473-3665, or email us.

Purim Chaos Volunteers: Purim is in 2 weeks and there's a lot of schlepping, decorating, supervising, drink mixing, and cleaning to be done. We are also in need of bar, beer, and snack sponsors (To be a sponsor of the Purim chaos, please go to the donate page and select the charge type 'Purim Chaos').

Matanot LaEvyonim: Gifts to the poor is arguably the most important Mitzvah of Purim. In addition to his usual gifting, Rabbi Bellino will partner with Rabbi Zvi Romm of the Bialystoker Synagogue as well as Rabbi Joe Wolfson of JLIC-NYU and the NYU community, in providing gifts to those in the region who truly need our assistance. Please consider generously donating to Rabbi Bellino's Discretionary Fund on the
website
. Be sure to specify that this donation is for Purim Charity.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Henry Reininger who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on March 17th  (the afternoon reading is Tzav). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to read Torah to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is March 17th (Vayiqra).

We wish a Mazal Tov to our friends, Dr. Shoshana & William Yagoda, upon the birth, Brit, and naming of their son, Amichai Yehuda. Mazal Tov to big siblings Ezra and Leora, as well as to uncle Brian.

The funeral and interment will be held at the Hillside / New Mt. Zion Cemetery (742 Rutherford Avenue in Lyndhurst NJ) on Monday, January 8th, at 11:00 AM.

We are grateful to the many of you that generously donated and honored their open commitments in the week before 2018. All sorts of programming and building upgrades are being planned and they could not happen without your support.

Rabbi Bellino still needs your help in paying for the Downtown Eruv. The annual share of the Downtown community is $36,000. How much to give is certainly up to you, and any donation is appreciated. To give you some context: If 200 families/individuals were to give $180, this year's fundraising effort would be over. To make a payment, please do so on my synagogue website, or send a check to: The Sixth Street Community Synagogue, 325 East Sixth Street, New York NY 10003. Be sure to specify that this donation is for the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund and for the Eruv.

We have postponed this week's Kids' Kiddush Buffet. This special kiddush, sponsored by Andy Gelfand & Dr. Ira Orgel, has been rescheduled for some time in February. (Hopefully when it's a drop warmer).

Snow day helpers: We are grateful to Dana Friedman who assisted us to improve our shul email and to Choni Bellino who insisted on venturing out in the snow to buy cholent supplies and aided in the preparation of this Shabbat's cholent.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is now being prepared. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Elie Yudewitz who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on January 20th (the afternoon reading is Beshalach).

The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is February 17th (Shabbat Teruma).

Events

February 3rd - CholentFest V:  CholentFest - our annual Cholent competition - is back for a fifth year! Join us for Shabbat Kiddush on February 3rd, and taste a wide variety of cholents. To register as a chef and to learn about preparation info, please email Eli Szus by January 19th. This is NOT a cholent eating contest. Prizes will be given to Best Cholent (Judged), Best Cholent (People's Choice), Best Decorations (Judged), Best Nontraditional Cholent (Judged).

If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Elie Yudewitz who read last week, and to David Waxman who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on December 16th (the afternoon reading is Vayigash).

The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is December 23rd (Shabbat Vayigash).
