News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a continued Mazal Tov to Sara Eisen & Matthew Levine upon the birth, brit, and naming of their son, Samuel Harrison (שמואל אהרן).

We  are saddened by the passing of Professor William Schwartz, beloved father of our friend, member, and treasurer, Alan Schwartz. The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 22nd at 9:00 AM at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue (5 East 62nd Street, New York City). Interment will follow at the Old Montefiore Cemetery (121-83 Springfield Blvd, Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY). Shiva will be observed at 860 Fifth Avenue. May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. For the Shiva schedule click here.

We  are very grateful to all of our friends who responded so generously to the Eight Days of Gelt campaign: Dr. Sara & Michael Aingorn, Estee Bardanashvili, Ellen Cherrick, Andy Gelfand & Dr. Ira Orgel, Tziona & Daniel Josephs, Dr. Elliot Levitch, Phoebe & Richard McBee, Elizabeth Miller, Julie Tauber & Gordon O'Brien, Ida & Dr. Theobald Reich, Modi Rosenfeld, Isobel Rubin, Julia & Shlomo Salant, Daniela Sirotti, Alan Schwartz, Jennifer & Joey Warren, and Shelly & Elie Yudewitz.

This is also a great time to honor your open commitments to the synagogue and to pay any outstanding balances. To see if you have an outstanding balance, please check your account on the synagogue website or contact the synagogue office.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is now being prepared. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Rabbi Bellino who read last week, and to Henry Reininger who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on December 30th (the afternoon reading is Shemot). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to read Torah to prepare a reading.

We remind that there will be some changes to the weekday Shacharit Schedule. This Monday and next Monday are federal holidays so Shacharit will start at 7:30 AM. This Thursday is Asarah b'Tevet and Shacharit will begin at 6:15 AM. (The fast begins at 5:51 AM).

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

The natural follow-up to Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday is "Whiskey Wednesday." Would you consider helping us defray the cost of - and perhaps even diversify - our Kiddush experience?

To do so, sign up on our website. You may select the level and - if you wish - the style or even the bottle you would like to be purchased. You will be thanked when your donated bottle is served.

We are grateful for your continued participation and support.

At this point in our synagogue's growth, we find ourselves doubly fortunate - fortunate to be joined by so many children and fortunate to have so many wonderful parents that are active in creating a warm, fun, and inspiring home for them here at shul.

All sorts of exciting children's activities are being planned for the upcoming months. If you are not yet on the Sixth Street Parents Listserv, please speak with Harris Marks or Adina Frank, or email sixthstreetparents@gmail.com.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to support these efforts. Please speak with or email Harris or Adina to offer your assistance.

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to our friend, Gabrielle Kaplan, grandaughter of Lillian & Rabbi Murry Penkower, upon her engagement to Allen Glenn.

We are grateful to Rav Yehuda Gilad, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Maaleh Gilboa, for his very informative talk tonight on the topic of *Illegal* Legal Conversion in Israel. We are also grateful to Alan Feder, David Hammer, and Sam Jesselson, alumni of Yeshivat Maaleh Gilboa, for their help in organizing this event, as well as to everyone who attended tonight's learning event.

Last week's Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton was a wonderful and enlightening experience. We are especially thankful to Rav Hanan Schlesinger and Antwan Saca, for their thought-provoking discussion on the efforts of Root/Shorashim/Judur to foster a local, grassroots movement of understanding, nonviolence, and transformation among Israelis and Palestinians. We are also grateful to our generous dinner sponsors and to the many of you who attended this important event.

We thank all those who pledged for the Kol Nidrei Appeal and have fulfilled their committment. To make a payment, please go to our website or send a check to: 325 East 6th Street, NY, NY 10003.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is now being prepared. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Jeremy Watman who read last week and to Neil Kitainik who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on November 11th (the afternoon reading is Toledot). We are looking for women to prepare  aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to read torah to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is November 18th (Shabbat Toledot).

Seuda Shelishit, 5:45 PM:
Q & A with Rav Hanan Schlesinger

Rav Hanan Schlesinger

Hanan Schlesinger is an Orthodox rabbi, teacher, and passionate Zionist settler, who has been profoundly transformed by his friendship with the Palestinians he has met.  His understanding of the reality of the Middle East conflict, and of Zionism, has been utterly complicated by the parallel universe to which they have introduced him.

Originally from New York, Rav Hanan made aliya at the age of 20 and has lived over the green line, in Alon Shvut, Gush Etzion, for over 30 years. He spent over 10 years learning in Israeli Talmudic seminaries and also studied towards a MA in Jewish Philosophy at Hebrew University. His professional career has been dedicated to teaching Jewish studies in various colleges and seminaries in the Jerusalem area, as well as in different frameworks in Florida and Texas.

It was in Dallas about 9 years ago that he became involved in interfaith work, first with Christians, and then with Muslims. There he founded Faiths in Conversation, a framework for Jewish - Christian – Muslim theological dialogue. The mind-expanding experience of these trialogues inspired him to attempt to meet Muslims and Christians back in the Holy Land.

Although always drawn to pluralism and deeply empathic for the other, Rav Hanan had never formed a personal relationship with a Palestinian until he returned to Gush Etzion about three and a half years ago. The meetings that began then have become far more meaningful than he could have imagined. He found himself part of the small team that founded Roots/Shorashim/Judur and has dedicated himself to bringing reconciliation to that tiny sliver of land that both Palestinians and Israelis call home.
