Dear Friends,
Effective immediately, all services and classes at Sixth Street Community Synagogue are suspended. The building is closed.
This was not an easy decision to make. Many of you will consider our choice to be extreme; especially given the many congregations that will surely remain open. We strongly believe that safeguarding health is a Halakhic priority, one that requires us to act boldly to protect our community, our neighborhood, and beyond. We know that this requirement supersedes any requirement of congregational prayer. As pioneers in thoughtful Modern Orthodoxy, it is our great hope that other congregations will follow our lead.
Are you thinking of going somewhere else for services?
- People over 60-65 and those with chronic illnesses should likely not attend synagogue or other assemblies under any circumstances. This is echoed in the CDC recommendations that are designed to protect those most vulnerable to Coronavirus infection, and at highest risk of the most serious consequences.
- Anyone presenting symptoms or any health problems should not attend synagogue or other assemblies.
General Recommendations
- Prepare your home, and practice ‘social distancing’ measures. Follow the recommendations from the CDC and other medical and public health experts.
- Social Distancing: https://time.com/5800442/social-distancing-coronavirus/
- Home Prep: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/home/index.html
- If you are someone who is at greater risk of infection, or has symptoms: ask for help. This includes help with food, medical assistance, or just to speak with someone.
If you need to get something from the building
- The building will be open tonight (Thursday) from 7-9 PM so that you may individually retrieve your tefillin or other personal items.
- Other times will be made available upon request.
We are still a community
- We will continue to be available to discuss matters with you, and help you find the resources or help you need.
- Classes will continue (and increase) online. Bear with us as we work out the details.
Thank you for partnering with us as we diligently follow the advice of professionals and demonstrate to God that we value life above all.
Best,
Gavriel Bellino
