The Challenges of a 21st Century Pioneer in the Negev: A Modern Take on Making the Desert Bloom
Monday, September 19, 2016 • 16 Elul 5776
7:30 PM - 9:30 PMThe JNF & the Sixth Street Synagogue invite you to join us on Monday night, September 19, as we welcome Tania Pons Allon.Tania moved from cosmopolitan Tel Aviv to a farm in the remote Arava region of the Negev, a place of many challenges, including a harsh desert climate, large distances between communities, and a lack of easy access to the resources so common in urban centers.
Tania will speak with us about living in the Negev, her life as a pioneer woman in Israel, and how the JNF is partnering with the Central Arava Regional Council to make the Negev habitable for the next generation of Israel's residents.
There will be a Q & A session following the presentation.
Light refreshments will be served.
Tania Pons Allon - Bio
Tania Pons Allon was born in Kibbutz Ketura, is married to Yoav Allon, a second generation farmer from Moshav Hatzeva, and is a mother to a 2 year old, Guy. Her husband, once a financial analyzer for a water company, is now a full time farmer who grows peppers, dates, grapes and mangos together with his father in the Arava desert.
Tania was working as a designer in a studio in Tel Aviv for 2 years, when she made the decision to come back home to Hatzeva and build a life here. Being born and raised in the Arava made it clear to her that she too will one day raise her children there, where family and the connection to the land come first.
Living and farming in the Arava could be difficult, the geographic isolation and the sharp climate condition are challenging, but the strong connection to the land and the caring and supporting community are things that can not be found in any other place.
In the past year, Tania has been working in the research development department in Central Arava Regional Council. She sees her work as a mission, one that has a direct impact on the community. It gives her much pride to know that what she does every day, influences not only her future, but the future of her children.
