News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazel Tov to Tali Zipper & Rabbi Andrew Scheer on their recent engagement.

Purim was a HUGE success. Our services and parties were very well attended (approximately 300 people were at Megillah and more than 800 people passed through our doors over the course of the night) and our Matanot L'evyonim campaign raised over $4,000 for those in need. For photo evidence of the evening, please go to our Facebook page.

We are grateful to:

  • Our Megillah readers: Rabbi Bellino, Alan Feder, Harris Marks, Eli Szus, Neil Kitainik, and David Waxman
  • The sponsors of Purim Chaos: Alan Schwartz, Donnie & Jackie Furst, Yitz Komin, Kenneth Grumer, and Claire and Dr. Paul Wachtel
  • Our devoted maintenance team, Franklin and Denys, for all their help at the party and after the party
  • Our friends from the University of Purim
  • Annie Watman and Alan Feder for arranging the Kids' party (For pictures of the kids' party, click here).
  • Everyone who helped set up for the party at night
  • Lions Beer Store for their generous help with the beer supply
  • El Grupo Diamante Norteño (the amazing Mariachi band that you know from the subway)
  • Vincenzo and Romano for the post-cleanup cleanup

We are most grateful to Rabbi Bellino for his vision, humor, and organization and implementation of what was by all counts a crazy fun, wonderfully-spirited, and abundantly successful Purim.

Our Children's Shabbat Program (Kommunity Kinderlach) will meet NEXT Shabbat, March 25, Parashat Vayakhel/Pekudei, and will be led by Rachel Kaminetzky. In April, the Shabbat program will meet on April 1st and 29th. The program is geared toward children 2-5 years of age. Children younger than 2 are welcome to join but must be accompanied by a parent. It begins at 10:15 AM and continues until the end of services. For more information, please contact us.

We are also grateful to Ellen Neuborne & David Landis for their great help with the seating. Purim

Purim begins this Saturday night, March 11, as Shabbat concludes. Shabbat will end at 6:39 PM, and we will hold off on Maariv until 7:15 PM, with Megilla shortly thereafter. Immediately following our services, the entire congregation is invited to join us for our Purim Celebration. We look forward to our friends from the University of Purim (nonaccreditted) joining us at approximately 10:00 PM. The party will end at some point before morning services. (Please remember that we spring forward into Daylight Savings Time and lose an hour or Purim.)

If you are available to help Rabbi Bellino set up the room for the Purim Party, please contact him.

The theme for Purim this year is a loving tribute to our own neighborhood, entitled "Lower East Side Disturbed." Come dressed as your favorite Lower East Side immigrant, rabbi, pickle, convict, landlord, artist, or victim! Or wear whatever costume you like. You do you. This is where individuality was born.

We will return on Sunday morning for Shacharit at 8:30 AM, and Megilla at 9:00 AM. There will be a Kids' Purim Party at 10:00 AM. Please RSVP here.

We thank all the sponsors of Purim Chaos: Alan Schwartz, Donnie & Jackie Furst, Yitz Komin, and Kenneth Grumer. And we are grateful to Lion's Beer Store for their generous contribution of beer.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending

TOMORROW NIGHT! Tuesday Evening Lecture Series with Dr. Samuel Fleischacker

02/20/2017 06:02:51 PM

Feb20

Does It Matter Who Wrote The Torah?

What Would Maimonides Say?

A Talk by Dr. Samuel Fleischacker

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, February 21st, at 7:00 PM, our own Dr. Samuel Fleischacker will talk with us about Maimonides' Eighth Principle of Faith - Divine Authorship of the Torah.

Famously, Maimonides says in his Commentary on the Mishnah and his Mishneh Torah that Moses wrote every word of the Torah at the dictation of God.  But Maimonides also says that God can't talk, and that anyone who thinks God can talk is an idolater. So what exactly does Maimonides mean by describing Moses as a scribe who wrote down God's words?

Please join us as Dr. Fleischacker presents a philosophical approach to the proper understanding of Maimonides' views on the nature of revelation - empowering us to stand, once again, with Moses on Sinai.

Pizza and Beer will be served.
The event is free but please register on the event page if you plan to attend.

About Dr. Fleischacker

Samuel Fleischacker is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and currently a Berggruen Fellow at NYU. He studied at Yale University, receiving his Ph.D. in 1989.  He works in moral and political philosophy, the history of philosophy, aesthetics and the philosophy of religion. Among the issues that have particularly interested him are the moral status of culture, the nature and history of liberalism, and the relationship between moral and other values (aesthetic values, religious values, political values). His publications include The Ethics of Culture (Cornell, 1994), A Third Concept of Liberty: Judgment and Freedom in Kant and Adam Smith (Princeton, 1999), On Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations: A Philosophical Companion (Princeton, 2003), A Short History of Distributive Justice (Harvard, 2004), Divine Teaching and the Way of the World (Oxford, 2011), What Is Enlightenment? (Routledge, 2012), and The Good and the Good Book (Oxford, 2015). IN ONE WEEK: Tuesday Evening Lecture Series with Dr. Samuel Fleischacker (Feb. 21)

Does It Matter Who Wrote The Torah?

What Would Maimonides Say?

A Talk by Dr. Samuel Fleischacker

Tuesday, February 21, 2017

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

In one week, on Tuesday, February 21st, at 7:00 PM, our own Dr.

2017 Annual Dinner

02/13/2017 07:39:52 PM

Feb13

Dear Friends,

The Sixth Street Community Synagogue continues to flourish. Together, we have enjoyed meaningful and efficient services, serious and thoughtful learning (at all levels), fascinating speakers, well attended shabbatons, delicious kiddushes, and festive celebrations. We are indeed a center of downtown religious life.

Our Annual Dinner will be held on March 6th, 2017. This year we will honor our Rabbi, Gavriel Bellino, and celebrate his ten years of service. Rabbi Bellino, along with his wife Cori Robinson, has sustained and revitalized our synagogue as well as the Downtown Jewish Community. He and his family are among our most valuable assets and it is with great pleasure that we will recognize the efforts they have made and the successes we have all shared on their account.

Will you be able to celebrate our accomplishments and help us secure our future? Your support would be directly applied to the strengthening of a rebuilding community and the reinforcement and beautification of its 170 year old building. We remind you that any amount helps our efforts and lifts our spirits.

Please RSVP here (To see photos from last year's Dinner, click here).

If you cannot attend, we ask that you please join us in this fundraising initiative.

As always, you may mail in payment or pay on the website.

We look forward to celebrating with you!
