News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

The Annual Dinner was a great success! We are very grateful to Kristina & Daniel Gerschel, Vivian Klaus, Joan Nachmani, and Alan Schwartz, for all their work in planning the annual dinner. We are also grateful to Ellen Neuborne & David Landis for their great help with the seating. We also thank the more than 150 people in attendance and the nearly 200 people overall whose financial contributions helped us raise close to $100K for our synagogue.

Purim

Purim begins this Saturday night, March 11, as Shabbat concludes. Shabbat will end at 6:39 PM, and we will hold off on Maariv until 7:15 PM, with Megilla shortly thereafter. Immediately following our services, the entire congregation is invited to join us for our Purim Celebration. We look forward to our friends from the University of Purim (nonaccreditted) joining us at approximately 10:00 PM. The party will end at some point before morning services. (Please remember that we spring forward into Daylight Savings Time and lose an hour or Purim.)

If you are available to help Rabbi Bellino set up the room for the Purim Party, please contact him.

The theme for Purim this year is a loving tribute to our own neighborhood, entitled "Lower East Side Disturbed." Come dressed as your favorite Lower East Side immigrant, rabbi, pickle, convict, landlord, artist, or victim! Or wear whatever costume you like. You do you. This is where individuality was born.

We will return on Sunday morning for Shacharit at 8:30 AM, and Megilla at 9:00 AM. There will be a Kids' Purim Party at 10:00 AM. Please RSVP here.

We thank all the sponsors of Purim Chaos: Alan Schwartz, Donnie & Jackie Furst, Yitz Komin, and Kenneth Grumer. And we are grateful to Lion's Beer Store for their generous contribution of beer.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, February 21st, at 7:00 PM, our own Dr. Samuel Fleischacker will talk with us about Maimonides' Eighth Principle of Faith - Divine Authorship of the Torah.

Famously, Maimonides says in his Commentary on the Mishnah and his Mishneh Torah that Moses wrote every word of the Torah at the dictation of God.  But Maimonides also says that God can't talk, and that anyone who thinks God can talk is an idolater. So what exactly does Maimonides mean by describing Moses as a scribe who wrote down God's words?

Please join us as Dr. Fleischacker presents a philosophical approach to the proper understanding of Maimonides' views on the nature of revelation - empowering us to stand, once again, with Moses on Sinai.

Pizza and Beer will be served.
The event is free but please register on the event page if you plan to attend.

Events

Tuesday, January 17, 7:00 PM - Book Talk: How the Wise Men Got to Chelm -
Stories of the limitlessly foolish Wise Men of Chelm are a staple of European and American Jewish literature. Dr. Ruth von Bernuth's new book How the Wise Men Got to Chelm provides a comprehensive survey of this Chelm literature and its Yiddish—and German—antecedents from the late Middle Ages through the Enlightenment and 19th-century nationalism. Please join us as Dr. von Bernuth will discus how literary Chelm has enabled writers to both entertain and highlight a variety of societal problems, a function that it continues to fulfill to this day. Pizza and Beer will be served. The event is free but please register on the event page if you plan to attend.

Thursday January 19, 7:00 PM - An Evening with Rav David Bigman
