LATE NIGHT: At the 14th Street Y

We have partnered with the 14th Street Y for their annual Shavot programming:

INTO THE NIGHT:
Downtown's Contemporary Spin on Tikkun Leil Shavuot

In addition to tonight's Shavuot class at Sixth Street, Rabbi Bellino will appear at the Y for a panel discussion at 11:00 PM and then again for a class at 12:15 AM, entitled: Jews in the Cafe - The History of Jewish Caffeine Addiction. (Please be aware that he has given this class before at Sixth Street, so attend if you haven't heard it before, or if you just really love coffee.)

We are proud to co-sponsor this event, because we strongly believe that the Y is an important and valuable local resource; working tirelessly to enrich the Jewish experiences of our diverse community-at-large. While much of the programming tonight at the Y is in accordance with halachic observance, some is not.

Rabbi Joe Wolfson grew up in London and has spent much of the last decade studying, working, and loving life in Israel. He studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion and Bet Morasha, through which he received his semikha from the Israeli Chief Rabbinate. He thought he was going into politics and did degrees at Cambridge, where he was president of the Jewish Society, and UCL. He has taught texts on five continents and as a faculty member of London School of Jewish Studies. Joe and his wife, Corinne Shmuel, have spent the last two years as the OU-JLIC educators at NYU where they help lead the Orthodox Jewish community at the Bronfman Center for Jewish Life.

Our Yom Yerushalayim event this past Tuesday night was a moving and meaningful experience. We are grateful to Rabbi Bellino for his inspiring musical Hallel, Rabbi Yotav Eliach and Annie Watman for their insightful discussion of Jerusalem's eternal significance, Jeff Katz for all his work in arranging the event, and also for sponsoring the event together with Ellen Cherrick and Daniela Sirotti. 
 

We are very much looking forward to Shavuot. Our observance of the holiday will include Torah Study with Rabbis Bellino & Wolfson, beautiful services, a lot of ice cream and cheese cake, a women's Megillah Reading, and a Women's Wine, Cheese, and Torah. The dairy dinner on Tuesday night is free, but registration is a must! Please do so ASAP. Click here.

 

We are expanding our library and are looking for sponsors to help us buy volumes of the new Artscroll Midrash Rabbah. Sponsorships are $54 a volume. If you are interested, please contact the synagogue office or Rabbi Bellino. Be sure to include your dedication information.

 

Help us hire the perfect youth leader to run a Bi-weekly (every other) Shabbat morning program for children ages 2-5. This is a paid position; experience with children/education is a plus. This is a unique leadership opportunity to create, develop, and maintain a children's program through working with community leadership. Please email us any recommendations.

 

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

 

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, and focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 PM.

 

SUFI JEWS: JUDAISM’S ENCOUNTER WITH ISLAMIC MYSTICISM: Approximately 400 years after the birth of Islam, some Jewish sages recommended Sufic ritual and thought. Rabbi Bellino will present the Medieval sages, Bahye Ibn Paquda and Abraham son of Maimonides, as well as Jewish-Sufic material from 16th Century Safed Pietism and Hassidut. Wednesdays 8:00-9:00 PM.

 

SHACHARIT: Miriam Kaplan on Shacharit, the daily morning prayer. Shabbat, following Kiddush.

 

AVOT D'RABI NATAN: Rabbi Bellino will present the midrashic explanation and elaboration upon Pirkei Avot. Shabbat, One Hour before Mincha

Rabbi Wolfson will speak on: Heavenly Torah vs. Earthly Torah The Worlds of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Eliezer. This event is free, but we ask that you register on the event page so that we may adequately prepare. Your sponsorship of this event would be greatly appreciated.

50th Anniversary Celebration

6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
 

Join us TOMORROW NIGHT, May 23, at 6:30 PM, for Mincha followed by a festive Maariv with a musical Hallel. After davening, Rabbi Yotav Eliach, principal of Rambam Mesivta, and Annie Watman, Director of AIPAC - South Shore Long Island, will engage in a spirited conversation about Israel, the Six Day War, the reunification of Jerusalem, and the future of the State of Israel. A Q & A session will be followed by refreshments.

Many people have expressed interest in the event. If you do plan to attend, please make sure to RSVP on the event page, so that we may properly order food.

The event is sponsored by Ellen Cherrick in memory of her grandmother, Eva Katz Feigenbaum, z'l, on her 25th yahrzeit on Yom Yerushalayim, and by Jeff Katz and Daniela Sirotti.
 


About Rabbi Yotav Eliach
Rabbi Yotav Eliach has served as Rambam Mesivta’s principal for 17 years. Before coming to Rambam, Rabbi Eliach taught at Flatbush High School for 19 years, where he was well-known for his dynamic classes. Rabbi Eliach comes from a prominent family of Jewish educators. He is the son of Rabbi David Eliach, who served as the principal of Yeshivah of Flatbush High School for over four decades, and Professor Yaffa Eliach, a renowned Holocaust educator and researcher.

About Annie Watman
Annie Watman currently serves as AIPAC's Director of South Shore Long Island. Annie recruits and trains AIPAC members on how to build effective relationships with their elected officials, conducts educational and policy briefings with community members, and directs legislative mobilizations. Annie has been with AIPAC since 2010 and began her work with the pro-Israel community on campus at NYU where she received both a Bachelor’s degree in Politics and Jewish History and a Master’s Degree in International Relations. After college, Annie worked for the Office of the Majority Leader on Capitol Hill, spent a summer in Israel as part of the Tikvah Fellowship and served last year as a Shapiro Family Fellow through the UJA. She serves on the boards of the Bronfman Center and Chabad of the Bowery.  Annie lives with her husband and son in downtown Manhattan.

Join us THIS TUESDAY - at 6:30 PM for Mincha followed by a festive Maariv with a musical Hallel. After davening, Rabbi Yotav Eliach, principal of the Rambam Mesivta, and our own Annie Watman, Associate Director of AIPAC - South Shore Long Island, will engage in a spirited conversation about Israel, the 6-Day War, the reunification of Jerusalem, and the future of the State of Israel. A Q & A session will be followed by refreshments.

  • A light dairy Shavuot Dinner on Tuesday, March 30, at 9:00 PM, followed by a presentation by Rabbi Joe Wolfson, OU/JLIC Director at NYU. Rabbi Wolfson will speak on: Heavenly Torah vs. Earthly Torah The Worlds of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Eliezer. This event is free, but we ask that you register on the event page so that we may adequately prepare. Your sponsorship of this event would be greatly appreciated.

  • Women's Wine, Cheese, and Torah on Thursday, June 1, at 4:00 PM.

Synagogue members, the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, accompanied by their families, will participate in a candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of the six million men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust.

SUFI JEWS: JUDAISM’S ENCOUNTER WITH ISLAMIC MYSTICISM: Approximately 400 years after the birth of Islam, some Jewish sages recommended Sufic ritual and thought. Rabbi Bellino will present the Medieval sages, Bahye Ibn Paquda and Abraham son of Maimonides, as well as Jewish-Sufic material from 16th Century Safed Pietism and Hassidut. Wednesdays 8:00-9:00 PM.

 

SHACHARIT: Miriam Kaplan on Shacharit, the daily morning prayer. Shabbat, following Kiddush.

 

AVOT D'RABI NATAN: Rabbi Bellino will present the midrashic explanation and elaboration upon Pirkei Avot. Shabbat, One Hour before Mincha

May 1 - Yom Ha'Atzmaut Celebration

This Monday night, May 1st, at 7:30 PM, the Sixth Street Community Synagogue and the Stanton Street Shul communities come together for a special celebratory Tefillah for Israel's Independence Day. The celebration, led by Meir Shapiro, will take place at the Stanton Street Shul, located at 180 Stanton Street. A light Israeli dinner will follow services.


May 7 - Yom HaShoah Commemoration
Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Holocaust survivor and accomplished speaker, will address us. Synagogue members, the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, accompanied by their families, will participate in a candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of the six million men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust.

May 13 - Mothers' Day Kiddush
On Shabbat Emor, May 13th, we will hold our Annual Mothers' Day Kiddush! For $54, you can be named as a contributor. The names of your daughters, mothers, grandmothers, teachers, or virtually anyone you choose, will be listed. You may list as many people as you wish. This list will be read aloud in shul, as well as distributed at the Kiddush. Please make your payment on the shul website.

 

May 13 - Lager Ba'Omer

Beer fest + Lag BaOmer = Lager BaOmer at Sixth Street Synagogue. This fourth annual event will be a fun time for all craft beer enthusiasts and students of Beer Yochai, and will also feature Israeli craft brews.

Ordained by the Jerusalem Rabbinate, he earned a BA in History from Yeshiva University, a Masters in Education from Azrieli Graduate School, and was a Graduate Fellow at the CUNY Center for Coexistence at the School for Public Affairs. R. Judah is Executive Director of Camp HASC, the Hebrew Academy for Special Children -the Jewish community’s premier Summer program for individuals with special needs He is a teacher of Jewish thought at numerous institutions throughout Israel, and shares Torah with communities throughout the United States. R. Judah founded Tzama Nafshi, an organization dedicated to fostering Jewish unity, identity, education, inspiration and participation, committed to working to connect Jews with their Heritage, and each other.

The kitchen has been thoroughly cleaned for Pesach and is now Chametz free. Since the Kiddush this Shabbat will be from Chametz, we ask that no one enter the kitchen and that certainly no food at all should be brought into the kitchen.

Rabbi Bellino will present the Medieval sages, Bahye Ibn Paquda and Abraham son of Maimonides, as well as Jewish-Sufic material from 16th Century Safed Pietism and Hassidut. Wednesdays 8:00-9:00 PM.

 

SHACHARIT: Miriam Kaplan on Shacharit, the daily morning prayer. Shabbat, following Kiddush.

 

MEKHILTA: A discussion of the Midrashim on the Book of Exodus, with a focus on the Tannaitic analysis of the Biblical verses dealing with the laws of Passover. Shabbat, One Hour before Mincha
 

THE BERDITCHIVER: Rabbi Bellino will present the Hasidic folklore and writings of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. Shabbat, Seudah Shelishit.

Rabbi Bellino will deliver his eleventh sermon for Shabbat HaGadol on Saturday, April 8 at 6:50 PM. This year's topic: Pesach - Zman Nekamateinu (Time of our Vengeance). 

May 7 - Yom HaShoah Commemoration
Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Holocaust survivor and accomplished speaker, will address us. Synagogue members, the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, accompanied by their families, will participate in a candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of the six million men, women and children who perished in the Holocaust.

The film  is a story of tradition, of resistance and resilience, and a celebration of the Streits family, whose commitment to their heritage and to their employees is inspiring proof that the family that bakes together, stays together. Rabbi Bellino will introduce the film with a brief presentation entitled "The Nuance of Automation." The director Michael Levine.will be on hand for a post-film discussion.

Pizza and Beer will be served.

Purim was a HUGE success. Our services and parties were very well attended (approximately 300 people were at Megillah and more than 800 people passed through our doors over the course of the night) and our Matanot L'evyonim campaign raised over $4,000 for those in need. The program is geared toward children 2-5 years of age. Children younger than 2 are welcome to join but must be accompanied by a parent. It begins at 10:15 AM and continues until the end of services. For more information, please contact us.
