Dear friends,

With the summer approaching, it is once again time for us to encourage synagogue membership; to ask that you please formalize and renew your annual commitments.

This has been a remarkable year. Together, we have experienced a growing community, delicious kiddushes, meaningful services, insightful classes, festive parties, engaging children’s programming, and respected and inspiring speakers. We have made several essential repairs, as well as aesthetic improvements, to our 170 year old building. We are most grateful to the many of you who stepped up to join our leadership, who attended our services, contributed financially, strengthened our community through your presence, and made our synagogue a true center of thoughtful Orthodox Judaism.

Membership dues go a long way in making all of this possible. Won’t you please share in our great legacy and help us continue this impressive revitalization? There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.

Level Before June 26 After June 26
Family $900 $800
Individual $500 $450
Associate $300 $300
Student $150 $150

Should you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments. This is easily set up through our website (sixthstreetsynagogue.org). Payment may be made on the site, or by mailing a check to 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003). Should you have any questions, please contact our treasurer, Alan Schwartz, or our Rabbi.

We invite all members in good standing to attend our annual membership meeting and election of officers, which will be held in the synagogue on June 26th, 2017.

We thank you for being a part of our great success,

Richard McBee
President

Gavriel Bellino
Rabbi

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Rhonda & David Malkin upon the birth of a son, as well as to Annie and Tali Malkin on the birth of their brother.

We wish a Mazal Tov To Avi Sosa & Jennifer Hudes upon their engagement.

Shavuot was a great success. We thank the very many of you who joined us for our meals, Torah study and services. We are most grateful to:

  • Our dinner sponsors: Sasson Abada, Natali & Elan Dobbs, Alan Schwartz, and Tali Zilberman & David Neuhaus (who sponsored in Memory of Dr. Alan Mintz)
  • The Lebewohl family for providing the cheese and potato blintzes
  • The Gasman family for providing the Ben & Jerry's ice cream
  • Ellen R. Cherrick for sponsoring the beautiful Shavuot flowers (in memory of her parents Udy (Katz) & William Cherrick
  • The women organized and attended the women's reading of Megillat Rut (in honor of the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg)
  • Rabbi Joe Wolfson for his insightful and entertaining Shavuot presentation.

We are expanding our library and are looking for sponsors to help us buy volumes of the new Artscroll Midrash Rabbah. Sponsorships are $54 a volume. If you are interested, please contact the synagogue office or Rabbi Bellino. Be sure to include your dedication information.

Help us hire the perfect youth leader to run a Bi-weekly (every other) Shabbat morning program for children ages 2-5. This is a paid position; experience with children/education is a plus. This is a unique leadership opportunity to create, develop, and maintain a children's program through working with community leadership. Please email us any recommendations.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is June 24th (Korach).

LATE NIGHT: At the 14th Street Y

May30

We have partnered with the 14th Street Y for their annual Shavot programming:

INTO THE NIGHT:
Downtown's Contemporary Spin on Tikkun Leil Shavuot

In addition to tonight's Shavuot class at Sixth Street, Rabbi Bellino will appear at the Y for a panel discussion at 11:00 PM and then again for a class at 12:15 AM, entitled: Jews in the Cafe - The History of Jewish Caffeine Addiction. (Please be aware that he has given this class before at Sixth Street, so attend if you haven't heard it before, or if you just really love coffee.)

We are proud to co-sponsor this event, because we strongly believe that the Y is an important and valuable local resource; working tirelessly to enrich the Jewish experiences of our diverse community-at-large. While much of the programming tonight at the Y is in accordance with halachic observance, some is not.

Please see the Y's website for more information.

Corrections & Additions

05/25/2017 08:49:21 PM

May25

1. Tomorrow morning is Rosh Chodesh, so Shacharit is at 6:15 AM. Help us have a strong minyan.

2. The Shavuot Dinner is May 30, not March 30. You knew that. Sign up. It's getting late.

3. More information about the event at the Y may be found here.

Best, GZB

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to all of this week's graduates, especially to Tali Zilberman, Adina Lichtman, Dr. Michah Timen, Henry Landis, and Chavie Lieber-Stokar.

We are grateful to the 45 individual/familiy sponsors of last Shabbat's Mothers' Day Kiddush.

Lager BaOmer was a great success! We are grateful to the organizers (Dr. Jeremy Block, Mike Miles, David Neuhaus, & Rabbi Bellino), the generosity and involvement of our local beer stores Malt & Mold and The Good Beer Store, our house band, The Sixth Street Schlepper Symphony (featuring Jessica Tamar Deutsch, Yoni Stokar, Eli Szus, Mike Miles, David Neuhaus, and Rabbi Bellino), our many volunteers (especially Tali Zilberman and David Waxman), as well as to the many many beer and shul enthusiasts who attended. We are expanding our library and are looking for sponsors to help us buy volumes of the new Artscroll Midrash Rabbah. Sponsorships are $54 a volume. If you are interested, please contact the synagogue office or Rabbi Bellino. Be sure to include your dedication information.
