May14

Dear friends,

With June approaching, it is once again time for us to encourage membership; to ask that you please formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogue.

We have had a remarkable year. Together, we have experienced the growth of our community, delicious kiddushes, meaningful services, insightful classes, festive parties, engaging children’s programming, and respected and inspiring speakers. We have made several essential repairs, as well as aesthetic improvements, to our 171 year old building. We are most grateful to the many of you who have stepped up to join our leadership, attended our services, contributed financially, strengthened our community through presence, and who have made our synagogue a true center of thoughtful Orthodox Judaism.

Membership dues go a long way in making all of this possible. Won’t you please share in our great legacy and help us continue this impressive revitalization? There are, of course, various membership options and we hope that one works for you.

Family Membership: $900 (Includes 2 High Holy Day Tickets)
Individual Membership: $500 (Includes 1 High Holy Day Ticket)
Associate Membership: $300 (For those with membership at another synagogue)
Student Membership: $150

Should you prefer, membership payments may be made in installments. This can be easily set up through our website:

  • For Membership Renewal, please click here
  • For New Members, please click here

You can also mail a check to 325 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10003. Should you have any questions, please contact our treasurer, Alan Schwartz, or our Rabbi.

We thank you for being a part of our great success,

Alan Schwartz

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to the Lebewohl Family upon the birth of a girl, born to Ariella & Jeremy Lebewohl.

We are grateful to Ahron Moeller for sharing with us his photographic work, entitled Feral Hasids, this past Sunday evening. The show was the first in a series of art exhibits we will be hosting that feature the work of emerging artists and friends of the shul.

We are very much looking forward to Shavuot, which begins next Saturday night, May 19th. Our observance of the holiday will include Shavuot Dinner & Torah Study with Rabbi Bellino, beautiful services, a lot of ice cream and cheese cake, and a Women's Wine, Cheese, and Torah. The dairy dinner on Saturday night is free, but registration is a must! Please click here to register.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Choni Bellino who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on June 9th (the afternoon reading is Korach). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to prepare a reading.

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. To sponsor or to co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush, a Shabbocktail, our Shabbat Shabeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino. The next available Shabbat Kiddush for sponsorship is May 26th (Naso).

News

In these tragic and scary times we stand with all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism, at home, in Israel, and abroad. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We wish a Mazal Tov to the Lebewohl Family upon the birth of Emily Rachel (אסתר רחל), born to Cara & Josh Lebewohl.

We wish a Mazal Tov to Michelle Zigelman & Ari Rosenblum upon the birth of Ava Zigi (אביה פריידא).

The Annual Dinner was a great success! We are very grateful to Shelly & Elie Yudewitz, Suzanne Dance & Andrew ObinVivian Klaus, Joan Nachmani, Tali Zilberman & David Neuhaus, and Alan Schwartz, for all their work in planning the annual dinner. We also thank the more than 150 people in attendance and the nearly 200 people overall whose financial contributions helped us raise well over $100K for our synagogue.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Jonathan Falik who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on May 5th (the afternoon reading is Behar).

The next available Shabbat Kiddush for sponsorship is May 5th (Emor / Cinco de Mayo).

Events

May 2nd - Lager Ba'Omer 5778
Beer fest + Lag BaOmer = Lager BaOmer at Sixth Street Synagogue. The fifth annual event will be a fun time for all craft beer enthusiasts and students of Beer Yochai. Please click here for more information or to let us know that you will attend.

May 6th - Feral Hasids Photo Exhibit
Feral Hasids is a story in photographs of religious New Yorkers escaping captivity from modern shtetl life. The men and women photographed are fervently pious, yet unashamed and feral. Aaron Moeller used Gonzo journalistic tactics to capture their experiences on camera, traveling to music festivals, forests, and rural landscapes around Upstate New York, sensitively placing himself in each episode to help birth a new sense of ritual, a new American pastime. Click here for more info and to register.

May 12th - Mothers' Day Kiddush
It's Sixth Street's Annual Mothers' Day Kiddush! For $54 you can be named as a contributor. The names of your daughters, mothers, grandmothers, teachers, or virtually anyone you choose, will be listed. Click here to register.

NEXT WEEK! Meet Your Neighbors Dinner

02/23/2018 01:32:28 PM

Feb23

Next Friday night, on Shabbat Ki Tissa, March 2nd, we will host a Meet Your Neighbors Shabbat Dinner, which will bring together our Jewish community with people who are experiencing homelessness. Through dinner, song, and conversation, we will enjoy the unique opportunity to meet our neighbors!

Meet Your Neighbors dinners are a facet of the unique vision of our friend Adina Licthman, founder of Knock Knock Give a Sock, an organization dedicated to collecting socks for those in need and committed to ending the stigma surrounding homelessness.

This dinner will be held in memory of Henry Zilberman ז"ל, beloved father of Tali Zilberman. Henry tried to get to know and welcome each and every person, regardless of their circumstances; and so, this is a fitting tribute.

Registration includes dinner for you and for a neighbor from a local shelter.

We are grateful to Rav David Bigman and Rav Meir Rubinstein of Yeshivat Maaleh Gilboa for their thought provoking Thursday night class on the place of Megillat Esther in our canon.

Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Yosef Baruh who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on March 17th  (the afternoon reading is Tzav). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to read Torah to prepare a reading.

The next available Kiddush for sponsorship is March 17th (Vayiqra).

Purim

February 25th - Kids' Pre-Purim Party: Join the Kommunity Kinderlach from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM for pre-Purim meshunanigans (meshunanigans will include hamantashen baking, grager making, Purim song singing, costume wearing, snack eating, and much more!!!). RSVP here.

Taanit Esther, February 28 - The fast begins at 5:11 AM and generally concludes at 6:16 PM. Of course, the force of law is (barely) Rabbinic, so the fast may be broken at Sunset (5:46 PM) should you experience discomfort. We will daven Mincha together at 5:20 PM.

February 28th - Megillah/Purim Party: Maariv will begin at 6:30 PM, with Megilla shortly thereafter. Immediately following our services, the entire congregation is invited to join us for our Purim Celebration. We look forward to our friends from the University of Purim joining us at approximately 9:00 PM. The party will end at some point before morning services. We will return on Thursday morning for Shacharit at 7:30 AM, with Megilla at 8:00 AM

Purim Chaos Volunteers: Purim is NEXT week and t
here's a lot of schlepping, decorating, supervising, drink mixing, and cleaning to be done. We are also in need of bar, beer, and snack sponsors (To be a sponsor of the Purim chaos, please go to the donate page and select the charge type 'Purim Chaos').

Matanot LaEvyonim: Gifts to the poor is arguably the most important Mitzvah of Purim. In addition to his usual gifting, Rabbi Bellino will partner with Rabbi Zvi Romm of the Bialystoker Synagogue, Rabbi Joe Wolfson of JLIC-NYU and the NYU community, and the Masbia Soup Kitchen Network, in providing gifts to those in the region who truly need our assistance. Please consider generously donating to Rabbi Bellino's Discretionary Fund on the
website
. Be sure to specify that this donation is for Purim Charity.
