Rabbi Natan Slifkin - Rationalism vs. Mysticism: Schisms in Traditional Jewish Thought

Natan Slifkin received his rabbinic ordination from Ohr Somayach Institutions, graduated from the Lander Institute in Jerusalem with an MA in Jewish Thought and Law, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Jewish history at Bar-Ilan University, with a dissertation on rabbinic encounters with zoology.

Rabbi Slifkin has had a lifelong fascination with the animal kingdom and has kept many dozens of exotic creatures. He has published numerous books on different themes relating to Judaism and the natural sciences, and he also wrote the guidebook for the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo. Rabbi Slifkin is currently working on a comprehensive Torah Encyclopedia of the Animal Kingdom.

Over the last fifteen years, Rabbi Slifkin has run a number of educational programs at zoos and natural history museums, and is a popular scholar-in-residence at synagogues worldwide. He also leads African safaris, and was featured on Animal Planet’s documentary “Beasts of the Bible.” His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Jerusalem Post, and numerous magazines, television and radio shows.
