Fast of the Firstborn

This Wednesday - Erev Pesach - is the Fast of the Firstborn. It is customary for all firstborn males to fast in order to recall the tenth and final plague which God inflicted upon the Egyptians. Additionally, it is common practice to participate in a siyum - the completion of a talmudic text - in order to remove the obligation of fasting.

Several scholars have suggested that a better method is to "redeem the fast" by giving charity. This was most famously explained by the 20th century halachic decisor, Rabbi Yosef Eliyahu Henkin.

This is a good year to follow Rav Henkin's advice. Please do so below. 100% of your donation will be given to charity.
