Summary |
It's a triple-threat Saturday this week, with impressive Torah, bad food, and penitential prayers (there's no thematic connection, but give it your best homiletical shot). Please join us as we learn Torah from Dr. Shai Secunda, "enjoy" Bad Kiddush, and start the recitation of Selichot with a Kumzitz, together with The Downtown Minyan and several special guests.
Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Shai Secunda
We welcome as our Shabbat Scholar Dr. Shai Secunda,
Jacob Neusner Associate Professor of Judaism at Bard College.
Sermon: A Brief History of Cussing
Shabbat Morning, 10:30 AM
Class: Flying Fragments:
The Book of Enoch and the Ilan Ramon Diary
Shabbat Afternoon, 5:20 PM
Shai Secunda is Jacob Neusner Professor of Judaism at Bard College, where he teaches in the Religion Department. He earned his PhD at Yeshiva University, and then held posts at Yale and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research focuses on classical Judaism and its interactions with other traditions and on the Talmud's Iranian context, (his book The Iranian Talmud, has recently been released in paperback). He writes regularly on Jewish scholarship and popular culture for the Jewish Review of Books.
Bad Kiddush
We at Sixth Street pride ourselves on amazing kiddushes, but not this time. Join us next Shabbat as we delight in the awfulness of the kiddush of yesteryear and appreciate the simple pleasures of store brand cola, Pareve cookies, and jarred gefilte fish. Copious Canadian Club will make you forget just how bad it is.
First Night of Selichot - 10:00 PM
Get an early start on the New Year with our guitar-enhanced Selichot! Join us for a Kumzitz and teachings at 10:00 PM, followed at 10:45 PM by Musical Selichot with The Downtown Minyan, along with special guests.
