We are on Summer Schedule, with Friday Mincha and Kabbalat Shabbat held at 7:00 PM (This will continue until September 14th!).

Rabbi Bellino will teach his Straight-forward Approach to Avot this Shabbat at 6:50 PM. There will be no Seudah Shelishit this week.

Shavuot Dinner & Torah Study - 9:00 PM
Please join us on the first night of Shavuot for a light dairy dinner, followed by Torah study with Rabbi Bellino, who will speak about "The Caveman: Reflections on Rabbi Simeon Bar Yochai." The dairy dinner on Saturday night is free, but registration is required.

 

Rabbi Bellino will also teach a class at 1:00 AM at the 14th Street Y, on the topic of 'Jews & Booze'. While the Torah (Hebrew Bible) sees wine as a pathway to sin, Jewish culture later ritualized and sanctified drinking. This class will analyze and discuss this transformation through traditional Jewish text study. Please see the Y's website for more details and to register.

Membership Drive: With June approaching, it is again time for us to encourage membership; to ask that you please formalize and renew your annual commitments to our synagogueMembership dues go a long way in making all of this possible. Torah Readers: We are looking for men who can prepare to read at Shabbat Mincha (and possibly at Shacharit during the week as well) throughout the year. A schedule of readers is being maintained. If you can commit to any dates, please contact Rabbi Bellino. We are grateful to Elie Yudewitz who will read this week. The next available Mincha leining is on June 23rd (the afternoon reading is Balak). We are looking for women to prepare aliyot for a Women’s Torah Reading  in the near future. Rabbi Bellino is happy to help anyone learn how to prepare a reading.

 

Please continue to assist our weekday morning Minyan. Consider increasing your commitment to community and synagogue by attending.

 

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue and community. On Shabbat Shelach, we welcome our next Shabbat Scholar, Rabbi Dr. Alan Brill, professor of Jewish-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University.


June 10th - Book Event: Paul Kaplan presents Lillian Wald - America’s Great Social and Healthcare Reformer
Please join us for a presentation of the newly released book Lillian Wald: America's Great Social and Healthcare Reformer by Paul Kaplan. Paul will discuss how this relentless advocate for the welfare of children, called "one of the least-known yet most important people" by President Franklin Roosevelt, became responsible for many of the social and health-related programs we take for granted today.

June 16th - Father's Day Kiddush
For $54 you can be named as a contributor. The names of your sons, fathers, grandfathers, teachers, or virtually anyone you choose, will be listed. You may list as many people as you wish. This list will be read aloud in shul, as well as distributed at the Kiddush. Please click here for more info and to register.

Classes

 

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, and focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 PM.


PIRQEI D'RABBI ELIEZER: Rabbi Bellino presents the often strange, occasionally esoteric, and rather entertaining, late (most likely) Palestinian Midrash. Wednesdays 8:00-9:00 PM.
 

AVOT: Rabbi Bellino will present the five chapters of Avot and Perek Kinyan HaTorah over the next 6 Shabbatot. After Shavuot he will teach Avot d'Rabbi Natan for the duration of the summer. Shabbat afternoons, 1 hour before Mincha.


SHACHARIT: Miriam Kaplan on Shacharit, the daily morning prayer. Shabbat, following Kiddush.
