News

Cake and ice cream have been sponsored by the Malkin Family in celebration of Anielle's birthday.

This Shabbat we bid farewell to Audrey, Daniel, Hillel & Avigayil Tordjman, our friends from France who are now moving to Israel. Please join us as we celebrate them with Champagne, apple pie, and Bamba that have been sponsored by Brenda Pace, Gloria Karpas, Andy Gelfand & Ira Orgel, and Zipporah & Jason Nagel.

We are grateful to Avi Beluca who has sponsored this week's Seudah Shelishit in memory of his mother, Tzippora Belluca.

This week's Friday Night Kiddush has been sponsored by Brian Yagoda in celebration of his birthday.

In these tragic and scary times we stand with Israel and all those victimized by senseless hatred and fanaticism. We pray for safety, healing, and peace.

We are on Summer Schedule. Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat will be at 7:00 PM until September 16th. Join us for services and you shall be rewarded with food, drink, song, and words of Torah.

Join us for the next five Shabbat afternoons as Rabbi Bellino presents the five chapters of Avot and Perek Kinyan HaTorah. For source sheets and charts, click here.

Our plentiful and delicious Kiddushes on Sixth Street greatly enhance our synagogue

and community. To sponsor or co-sponsor a Friday night Kiddush, a Shabbat Kiddush,

a Shabbocktail, our Shabbeer supply, or a Seudah Shelishit, contact Rabbi Bellino.

The next available kiddush for sponsorship is May 28th.

We are grateful to the more than 40 individuals and families that co-sponsored last Shabbat's Mothers' Day Kiddush. To see the listing, click here. Reminder: This year's Fathers' Day Kiddush is on June 18th!

Classes

FOUNDATIONS OF JUDAISM: A sensitive and sophisticated introduction to Judaism, intended for beginners, and focusing on many of the ritual, legal, linguistic, and philosophical basics of our faith. Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 PM. This week: Concluding Blessings.

THOUGHT OF NACHMANIDES: A weekly class focusing on the thought of Rabbi Moses ben Nachman. Rabbi Bellino will teach the more essential commentaries on that week’s parsha and will contextualize the Ramban’s remarks within the greater contexts of parshanut and philosophy. Wednesdays 8:00-9:15 PM. This week: The Holidays.

AVOT: Rabbi Bellino will present the five chapters of Avot and Perek Kinyan HaTorah over the next 6 Shabbatot. After Shavuot he will teach Avot d'Rabbi Natan for the duration of the summer. Shabbat afternoons, 1 hour before Mincha. This week: Chapter 2.

JEWISH POETIC LITURGY: Rabbi Bellino will present ancient, medieval, and early-modern religious poetry. Special attention will be paid the Biblibal, Talmudic, Midrashic, and often Kabbalist references contained therein. Shabbat, Seudah Shelishit.

Events

JOMIX: Join us on May 23th at 7:00 PM for a lecture and slide show as Joel Silverstein presents the way Jewish artists use the comics medium as a mean to express their own Jewish identity and cultural experience. He will also examine the complex relationship of art, identity and culture within the Jewish community at large. He will touch on traditional genres such as superhero, political satire, romance, horror, science fiction and confessionals through a Jewish lens. We will serve pizza and beer at 7:00 PM and the presentation will begin at 7:30 PM. RSVP by May 20th.

Lager BaOmer is on the evening of May 25th. This event will be a great time for all craft beer enthusiasts and students of Beer Yochai. For more information click here.

We are excited to be a host synagogue of this year’s Eshel Downtown Shabbaton on Shabbat Behukotai (June 3-4). Eshel’s mission is to create community and acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Jews and their families in Orthodox communities. Shabbat hospitality for visiting guests is appreciated.

We very much look forward to Shabbat Nasso (June 17-18) when we will welcome Rabbi Judah Mischel as our Shabbat Scholar. Reb Judah is the Program and Personnel Director of HASC, a Jewish camp for children with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Save the Date: Our Annual Dinner will be held on Wedesday, June 22nd at the Brotherhood Synagogue.
